A Street Cat Named Bob | [James Bowen]

A Street Cat Named Bob

When James Bowen found an injured, ginger street cat curled up in the hallway of his sheltered accommodation, he had no idea just how much his life was about to change. James was living hand to mouth on the streets of London and the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet James couldn't resist helping the strikingly intelligent tom cat, whom he quickly christened Bob. He slowly nursed Bob back to health and then sent the cat on his way, imagining he would never see him again. But Bob had other ideas.

    "An enjoyable light read"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

No. Decent book...but overhyped. The story of a recovering drug addict who busks on the streets of London and the ginger cat he adopts. A remarkable tale... but told with significant repetition and not a lot of depth.

Would you ever listen to anything by James Bowen again?

    No

    "Should be 5 stars"

I loved Bob right from the beginning. To be ultra-critical though, the narration seemed "false" and irritated me. From the off it sounded like it was being read from the page and not spoken; first I thought it was a poor narrator but no, he is obviously very talented, as evidenced with delivery of a variety of accents later on. So this must be deliberate and then that really irritated me because throughout he portrays James Bowen as an ingenue or a little boy when he clearly is not. A great listen and, having lived in London at the start of the Big Issue era, very moving and I want to follow Bob and James's story.

    "Lovely"

I was surprised by how much tension there is in this tale. It's well read and has a good structure. It didn't take me long to listen to it as, once I'd started, I didn't want to stop. I'm going to use my next credits to buy the follow-up.

    "Disappointing"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A different book. Although Bob is clearly a very special cat and having a pet gave James' some purpose in his life, that's about it. James' attempts to find meaning in Bob's behaviour become frustrating and ridiculous after a while. Also, at no point did James appear to consider that he might be exploiting Bob's tolerant nature for his own gain. Although, I am generally sympathetic to the plight of the homeless I was disappointed that despite the progress that he makes in his life following Bob's arrival, the height of James' ambition is to continue selling the Big Issue on the streets of London.

Would you ever listen to anything by James Bowen again?

    I'm afraid not.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narrator was convincing as James Bowen.

    Story
    "Great read"
What made the experience of listening to A Street Cat Named Bob the most enjoyable?

The coming together of two souls cast aside by the rest of the world to give each other strength and love

Who was your favorite character and why?

Bob and James just a fantastic story of overcoming circumstance

Would you listen to another book narrated by Kris Milnes?

No I found his voice a little sarcastic at times

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Moments when James thought Bob had been scared away, a lot was shown on this journey but non so much showed different peoples true characters when someone else is in trouble looking for a lost loved one

    "A Streetcat Named Bob"
If you could sum up A Street Cat Named Bob in three words, what would they be?

    Emotional, tear-jerker, justice,

What does Kris Milnes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Up-beat voice. 'southern' English likeable accent.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but sadly life gets in the way!

    Any additional comments?

This was my first ever audio-book. I think it was a good choice because it wasn't the kind of book to 'startle' you if someone came-upon you unexpectedly! As a cat-lover and someone who has always lived with cats it was a great listen.

"moving true story of a cat and a recovering addict"
What did you like best about A Street Cat Named Bob? What did you like least?

a genuinely moving account of how the author's life was turned around by a very persistent street cat in the end the enjoyment was limited by a slightly repetitive quality to the tale.

"Perfectly enjoyable with some eye-opening moments"

This interesting story provided some insight into the harsh reality of life on the streets of London and how difficult this can be, particularly with a pet in tow. It also examines a journey of personal growth driven by a desire to do what's best for a close friend and pet.

Very honest and revealing, definitely worth a listen. I imagine cat-lovers will be able to relate best to the special relationship that develops between Bob and James.

    "What an amazing true tale!"

I first heard of James Bowen and his ginger tom, Bob from a friend who had who had watched an interview with them both on TV. Bob didn't say very much, but just as when James was busking, he gave his support! This is the true story of how a very determined cat, sought out James and would not let him go! James begins on his journey upwards, back into society, off the streets.

This is a book for anyone, not just people who love cats, About a cat who cares and teaches a human to do the same, thereby, teaching a human how to like himself.

An amazing tale, an uplifting story, all the better for being true.
