Publisher's summary

"In the summer of 1991 I was a normal kid. I did normal things. I had friends and a mother who loved me. I was just like you. Until the day my life was stolen. For eighteen years I was a prisoner. I was an object for someone to use and abuse. For eighteen years I was not allowed to speak my own name. I became a mother and was forced to be a sister. For eighteen years I survived an impossible situation. On August 26, 2009, I took my name back. My name is Jaycee Lee Dugard. I dont think of myself as a victim. I survived. A Stolen Life is my story in my own words, in my own way, exactly as I remember it."

Wow

It took so much courage for Jaycee to write and narrate this book. Thank you for sharing your story and helping the world learn ways to help others heal.

Brave, Bold and Honest Horror!

When i first learned of Jaycee's survival, and thought of my own daughter, I wished my daughter would die a quick death than to have suffered repeated sexual abuse at the hands of someone like Garrido. What a true POS he is.

But, after hearing Jaycee's pure resilience, I am confident that it is truly a gift that she lived to see her mother again and be able to help others get through their own traumatic situations.

Whether she is a polished narrator to me is really irrelevant. The fact that she was courageous enough to tell you her story herself is truly essential to her healing, and I can only applaud her for that. For being a shy, soft- spoken type, she really showed up and defended herself and her decisions, whether they affected only her, or her and her girls. It was having those two girls that likely saved her life!!

They were all victims! Jaycee doesn't come across as having the victim mindset, which truly makes her the victor!!

To be honest, I didn’t finish the first chapter.

I have heard a lot of podcasts and seen several things on the story, however, because of the voice actors reading level/skills, I was not able to get into this audiobook. I will be purchasing it elsewhere and possibly will come back to adjust the rating.

Blessed?!? Yes!!!

This book gave me a different outlook, an entirely different perspective on where I am now versus where I think I ought to be. I could have been in Jaycee's shoes, just as anyone. While I still struggle with accepting the fact that I am not where I want to be, I think about where Jaycee was when she got rescued. She had absolutely nothing to her name, a fifth grade education, and two daughters for which to care as a single mom in a world that was overwhelming, considering that she had spent 18 years in solitary. She had to start from square one 29 years old and even had to get to know her real family as if they were strangers bc it had been so long. I find that most days seem so long. However, comparing my long days to 18 years, I know I will survive. If Jaycee can have a such an incredible zest for life and considering herself blessed despite all that she has had to endure, then I can get through one long day after the next. At least I can freely choose to change my situation. May God bless Jaycee and her girls in the years to come. I am so glad I chose to hear her story.

The bravery of her telling her story in her own voice. It made me cry tears of happiness.

Jaycee Dugard is a bad ass and extraordinarily strong woman. I don’t know her but I was proud of her during this book. 5 stars.
