Publisher's summary

When he arrives to take up his first posting as a GP in Collintrae, a small fishing village on the West coast of Scotland, young Tom Smith isn't quite sure what to expect. Certainly, nothing in his medical training could have prepared him for what he finds - a baker with nine lives, Mad Maggie in the Muck, and a gaggle of giggling nuns are just a few of the extraordinary cases that he comes up against.

Heartwarming and gloriously eccentric, Dr Tom's stories capture the beauty of the Lowlands, the joys and sorrows of its inhabitants, and the richly rewarding experiences of life as a Scottish country doctor.

Critic reviews

"An affectionate and hugely entertaining memoir of the incident-packed five years that Smith spent looking after the mainly farming families in his patch. If only modern medicine had as much heart." ( Guardian)

from another era

Wonderful, true stories from another era. I thoroughly enjoyed these tales from a country doctor.

This book grew on me. I know I will listen to it again.

With COVID, I have had many hours to listen to audio books. When I started this book, I was expecting a traditional story line of beginning, middle and ending. I was looking for a book more in the style of Patrick Taylor’s books. This book instead is a chronicle of this author’s memorable and interesting experiences while providing medical care to his patients in a rural country village in Scotland. Once I opened my mind to what I was reading, I LOVED this book. I know will listen to it again.

A good story, well told

I really enjoyed this - the experiences of a rural doctor in the mid 50s to the 60s. Not only were there lots of fun stories and interesting characters. There was also some very interesting perspective on the history of medicine and medical practice.

Wonderful writer and narrator!

By the end of the audio book I felt like could put faces to the characters. Highly recommend!

Enjoyable

I truly enjoyed this light, heartwarming tale. I have always felt drawn to things and stories from Ireland and Scotland (my heritage). This was a relaxing and uplifting tale that I would recommend to my friends.

Astonishing!

I can not believe that was really his life!!! Some of it reads like a film noir or doctor's drama. He truly had a very full life there.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to read more non-fiction. What a steppi g stone for me!

Everyone's favorite grandpa

James Harriet works on people. what a fun book. This is the Hamish Macbeth of the medical world. One day when I get to Scotland I hope the locals are as quirky and interesting as is written by this doctor.

A good listen

Storytelling is an art. Dr. Smith has conquered the art of both medicine and storytelling in his book. Truly a good listen.

Great Storyteller

Loved the stories and the narration. If he has any other books I would grab them up.
