Publisher's summary

An unlikely political star tells the inspiring story of the two-decade journey that taught her how Washington really works - and really doesn’t.

As a child in small-town Oklahoma, Elizabeth Warren yearned to go to college and then become an elementary school teacher - an ambitious goal, given her family’s modest means. Early marriage and motherhood seemed to put even that dream out of reach, but 15 years later she was a distinguished law professor with a deep understanding of why people go bankrupt. Then came the phone call that changed her life: Could she come to Washington, DC, to help advise Congress on rewriting the bankruptcy laws?

Thus began an impolite education into the bare-knuckled, often dysfunctional ways of Washington. She fought for better bankruptcy laws for 10 years and lost. She tried to hold the federal government accountable during the financial crisis but became a target of the big banks. She came up with the idea for a new agency designed to protect consumers from predatory bankers and was denied the opportunity to run it. Finally, at age 62, she decided to run for elective office and won the most competitive - and watched - Senate race in the country.

In this passionate, funny, rabble-rousing book, Warren shows why she has chosen to fight tooth and nail for the middle class - and why she has become a hero to all those who believe that America’s government can and must do better for working families.

Excellent story. An inspiring example.

There are few members of Congress who I truly admire. I am a cynical person, and I believe that most of their elections are bought and paid for by lobbyists and powerful corporate interests.

Not so with Elizabeth Warren. I believe she is a true champion of the people. Her principles and genuine good nature are an example of what every member of Congress SHOULD be like. And if they were, our country would be a better place.

The book offers fascinating details of Ms. Warren's rise from a small-town Oklahoma PTA member to a Harvard professor, a national level player in politics, and eventually to the US Senate.

humble beginning Roc finally

the book starts off campout, with what seems like too many details about the home life, but by the end of chapter 2 it start to come together. The career path history is very informative. In the end the message is very clear. I truly hour Elizabeth Warren runs for president in 2020.

Wow! This book is so eye opening!

I read this book for my book club, and I am so glad it was chosen. At times it was so overwhelming that I had to stop reading. The politics are just so discouraging, but I so appreciate people like Elizabeth Warren who keep trying anyway. Drinking from a fire hydrant would be the way to describe what she is trying to do.

I loved the background information that made her story so relatable and I am appalled by the terrible greed and self interest that she has had to battle. Thank you for your integrity and your fight, Elizabeth Warren!

Fantastic memoir about a courageous woman!

I read the Two Income Trap about ten years ago and that is when I became a huge fan of Elizabeth Warren. This memoir about her life allowed me to learn about her humble beginnings and the fight she's been putting up for so many years. She is quite admirable.

I just love her

So well spoken. If you want to know how she went from an Oklahoma gal hoping to be a teacher to a senator fighting the good fight, this is it.
