Heartbreakingly beautiful

This story was beautifully told. I thank the writer for creating this story without glossing over history.

Just what I needed

I found this book on a quest for some historical fiction with beauty in the writing and a little magic in the story. There isn't a lot of "magic," aside from the legend in the first chapter, but still has its own subtle magic that kept me captivated. The reading was wonderful, too, especially Sue Jean Kim. The perspectives are unique, illuminating, and yet familiar, which is my fiction sweet spot.

Haunting story of lives in distant times in Korea

An epic story of giseng during Japanese occupation and Korean War. Beautifully and poetically written. Masterfully read.

Wonderful book

This is a very well-written and well-performed story. I couldn’t stop listening - I was so intrigued by Jade and her story as it was interwoven with others. I learned a lot I did not know about the history of Korea and it’s people. This is an excellent book!

Pleasantly surprised

I’m a fan of historical fiction and this book was a wonderful education into Korea before and after World War II. The characters were engaging and so interesting, I was totally drawn into this incredible story. I highly recommend this book.

Moving and visceral

Incredibly moving-- especially in the second half I frequently teared up. Juhea Kim drew such complex and visceral relationships.

I loved this book- the author has thoughtful and emotional writing. what a great story

Not bad

The story is interesting, with some unique aspects. However, the writer goes to great lengths to produce drawn-out and rather ridiculous and self-conscious metaphor and similes. I tried not to let these weak attempts at writing lyrically to distract me too much from the plot line. So…I all, a okay book.

Beautifully written and read, the story weaves together many different characters and experiences while keeping a theme throughout.

Great history lesson

I knew very little about Korea’s independence movement from Japan - found it fascinating. Story and storytelling was engaging. The writing was very detailed, but I am not sure that was what was needed to make this a great read.
