Five Five Five across the board

I will start out admitting that I absolutely adore the writing of Sheri Cobb South. The team of Cobb South and Froomkin is truly gold for my listening experience.

Lord Ramsey, Richard, is set on helping out his American cousin, Susannah by offering a marriage of convenience. It is super fun to hear the play between cousin Peter and Susannah and Jane and Richard. The staircase scene is hilarious! Susannah's American culture clashes with her British cousins from the very start, but it never feels condescending on either part. It's just pure delightful storytelling. Bravo!

Joel Froomkin has so much fun with this performance that the 6 hours fly by.

Too bad it wasn't finished

I found this book entertaining and it was nice to hear a male narrator for a change. Unfortunately the book ended before the conclusion. It appearred to be missing one or more chapters. I tried to notify Audible of the problem but was unsuccessful. I returned it and made up my own ending.

Lovely historic romance!

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are quirky which I loved. Without giving it away, I'll just say I was very satisfied the way it ended, just what you wished for. I wouldn't mind this book becoming part of a series. The narrator Joel Froomkin, one of my favorites, is so good that the book sounds like a full cast production. The story reminded me of Sheri Cobb South's series The John Pickett Mysteries, (which has the same narrator), which I highly recommend checking out.. A Delightful Jane Eyre Rom Com

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. And, as always, any book narrated by Joel Froomkin is an absolute joy. Joel breathes life into every character, no matter if it's a single line in the whole book.

Taking place in England, a wealthy Lord learns that a female cousin in America has been left orphaned, and although 18, women in the 19th Century were not considered able to take care of themselves, this despite the fact that Susanah has inherited quite a bit of land and money. So, doing his duty, Lord Richard Ramsay sends a proposal of marriage. Susanah accepts and boards a ship to England.

Richard's other cousin, Jane, had assumed the mantle of Lady of the House upon the death of Richard's mother, for home she had been taken on as companion 10 years earlier. Oh, and Richard had proposed to Jane 10 years ago, but she turned him down, at the time because she didn't know him well, but in the intervening years, she has fallen in love with him. And, of course, Richard is oblivious to this, but everyone else in the household know it.

And yet another cousin, a poorer relation, has been working as Richard's valet for the last two years. So Richard sends Peter to accompany Susanah from the docks to his mansion. Peter is immediately smitten, as is Susanah, but neither can say anything because of her betrothel to Richard.

Susanah is not as cultured as a British lady would be, so she is a little backwards in the things she says and does. But she learns something new every day, mostly in Peter's company.

So, you can probably guess at the Rom-Com elements I've described and the complications that ensue.

But the author knows how British society worked in those days and gives the story authenticity for the times. Joel Froomkin's voices bring all these characters to life perfectly. Joel always puts a little movie in my head, his characters and even the situations performed exquisitely.

If you're a Rom Com fan, or a fan of Sheri Cobb South's books, you will thoroughly enjoy this one, too.

Old American Frontier Meets British High Society

This was a very fun clash of cultures romance set in the 1800's. It's a fast read and great for those looking for clean regency romance with a touch of comedy. I really loved the Susannah's character and felt for her as she struggled to fit into a very British high society life. My favorite scene was her interactions with the house's French head chef... so funny!

I'm not sure what happened to the other reviewer who stated the ending was missing... I had no such problems, all the chapters where there with a fully concluded ending. I didn't even notice any sound editing or other edit issues. If anything I did feel the end was a bit abrupt but only because I would have liked to see a little bit more.

The narrator does an incredible job with the characters voices, accents and the acting is all so seamless. It was fun to hear his Southern accent, he did a great job with it and didn't overdue the southern as I feel others often make it a drawl and more bumkin then necessary.

Fun Book

I tend not to read historical romance but I saw that Joel Froomkin was the narrator and I love his voice. Plus Sheri Cobb South writes a series that I love "John Pickett Mysteries" so I thought I would try it, and I am so glad I did. What a fun listen/read. I loved Joel's narration voice for the character Susanna who is from the American Frontier. Oh my goodness so fun! The story was a bit predictable but I didn't mind at all. It's not a mystery to solve so don't you want the guy to get the girl? That is the point of a romance, right? It has been my experience that you will enjoy anything written by Sheri Cobb South and read by Joel Fromkin, can't go wrong.

My personal introduction to the world of Regency Romantic fiction came when I was a bored, homesick twelve year old in my grandmother's house, where I stayed on weekdays because it was much closer to my school than my parents' home. To the delight of my bookworm-ly heart, tucked in a corner near my room I found a treasure trove of old, slender romance novellas by authors like Barbara Cartland, various half-forgotten authors who used to publish Harlequin Historical Romances, and my personal favorite, Georgette Heyer. This book is particularly nostalgic because it reminds me of those cherished days, when I gleefully devoured such light-hearted fare and got to meet interesting and oftentimes ridiculous characters, most of whom had more manners than common sense, living in a world long past and very far away, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I must admit, I wasn't quite expecting to be more than mildly entertained, having mostly left off reading Regency romances in favor of vastly different genres by the time I left Uni. However, as it was written by an author whose other works I enjoy, as well as read by a very talented narrator, I was more than willing to give this book a chance. Indeed, I found that this well-presented, delightful little novella, featuring a potential 'unfortunate mesalliance' between a very proper English gentleman and a very not-proper American girl intent on a marriage of convenience, the opinions of his snooty and very unhappy relatives, the travails of the mismatched pair's long-suffering admirers, and the ensuing inevitable comedic clash between two completely different cultures had much more than met my expectations from the introductory scene up 'til the nicely satisfying ending, and I would gladly recommend it to people who occasionally enjoy short, light, sweet, fluffy Regency romances of the non-bodice-ripping type.

What a fun Regency romance! Richard, Lord Ramsey, is the perfect English gentleman and always does what is right and proper. When a distant relation dies in frontier America (Kentucky, to be exact) and leaves his daughter, Susannah, on her own, Richard offers to marry her. After all, it's the right thing to do.

He is already supporting his two dowager aunts, his distant cousin, Jane Hawthorne, and another distant cousin, Peter Ramsey. When Susannah arrives from America, she is ill prepared for the life of a Baroness. And, the English Ramsey household is ill prepared for her free-spirited ways!

This book has all of the elements that I love in a Regency: fashion, elegant balls, and crazy mix-ups until you reach the HEA ending. Even though the end result is apparent from early in the book, the trip to get there is perfect! Well-written story with great characters, I fell in love with all of characters (even the annoying ones!).

The narrator was absolutely perfect for the book and his voices and pacing made this a wonderful listen. Even his female voices were great (which is often a problem with male narrators). Highly recommended for Regency readers looking for something a bit different.
