Nach dem Tod seiner geliebten ersten Frau heiratet der Bahnwärter Thiel aus Vernunftgründen die Kuhmagd Lene. Zusammen bekommen sie ein zweites Kind, dessentwegen Thiels erster Sohn Tobias von Lene vernachlässigt wird. Obwohl Thiel seinen Sohn liebt, unternimmt er nichts gegen die Misshandlung. Bald leidet er unter quälenden Gewissensbissen und flüchtet sich immer häufiger in Visionen, in denen er seiner Minna begegnet. Als ihm beim Bahnwärterhäuschen ein Stück Acker überlassen wird und seine Frau dort Kartoffeln anpflanzen will, dringt sie in einen Bereich ein, der ihm bisher noch allein gehörte. Bei einem Besuch auf dem Acker wird Tobias in einem unbeaufsichtigten Moment von einem Schnellzug erfasst und stirbt. Thiel tötet daraufhin in einem Anfall von Wahnsinn seine Frau sowie das gemeinsame Kind. Wenig später wird er auf den Gleisen sitzend gefunden, wo sein Sohn gestorben ist. In der Hand hält er die Mütze des Jungen.
Gerhart Hauptmann (1862-1946) war ein bekannter deutscher Schriftsteller und Dramatiker. Er gilt als der bedeutendste deutsche Vertreter des Naturalismus, hat aber auch andere Stilrichtungen in sein Schaffen integriert. Hauptmann wurde in Schlesien geboren und versuchte sich in wechselvollen Lehr- und Wanderjahren erfolglos als Maler und Bildhauer. 1889 zog er mit seiner Frau und seinen Söhnen nach Berlin, wo er sich endlich seiner eigentlichen Bestimmung, dem Theater, widmen konnte. 1887 war bereits seine "novellistische Studie" mit dem Titel "Bahnwärter Thiel" erschienen. In seinen Werken setzte sich Hauptmann mit dem Schicksal einfacher Bauern und Arbeiter auseinander, die an gesellschaftlichen Zwängen zugrunde gehen. Zu seinen bekanntesten sozialkritischen Dramen gehören "Vor Sonnenaufgang" (1889) und "Die Weber" (1892). Als Theaterautor und bedeutender Vertreter der deutschen Literatur erreichte Hauptman - auch im Ausland - großen Ruhm und erhielt 1912 den Literatur-Nobelpreis. 1946 starb er in Schlesien und wurde in Hiddensee begraben.
