So sad.

This has been the saddest book I ever finished. Wished I’d it was so sad, before I started it.

Strong bonds in this one!

The author did an excellent job of creating the balance of the mundane, the tragic or challenging and the hope and healing in relationships. I loved this listen! I felt like it was historically accurate (based on my limited understanding of the place and time). I also felt that it depicted the daily tragedies of the era, or any era, with compassion, resilience and wisdom. Mostly, I just loved our protagonists and kept rooting for them to find each other again!

Sad but good

A well done story however I like more happiness and a happier ending. I listen to these for an escape from realities. I will say it’s very well written and I am sure realistic. I recommend this title but like I said I like more unrealistic happiness

Loved the story.. sad though

I love historical fiction and thus did not disappoint. I was sad when the book ended for more than one reason.

The saddest story

This may be the first Sandra Dallas novel I have ever read. it was good, but also so very sad.

Horrible ending

Spoiler alert. Loved the book.. Until the end. I don't understand why the ending had to be that way.

A feel good book

Sandra Dallas is an amazing historic fiction writer, even more so because she isn't writing World War 2 stories that are dominating the genre right now. Her books are extremely accurate to the time period that she is writing about. This story is a nice easy read.

Sad yet lovely.

It is a story of struggle and love. Very real with a great cast of characters who understood community.

It Wasn't An Easy Life

I get impatient with novels nowadays because authors knock themselves out, even drag out a story's ending, to tie everything up in a tidy little bow. "And they lived happily ever after." So many times I find myself saying "get out of there", wanting a story to end because the story has been told several pages--even chapters-- before the final paragraph. I don't need every single question answered. Sandra Dallas weaves a tale that you know played out over and over again throughout history but is rarely told from the perspective of the main character. I appreciate the story's realism and Dallas' treating the reader as an adult and not a starry-eyed teenager. It was a good story about the highs and lows of western life when people were truly on their own, before measles vaccinations, rural medical clinics, wide availability of telephone lines. The narrator was excellent and presented distinct, un-jarring voices for male and female characters.
