Our relationships create a setpoint for our daily moods and influence our immune response; they are crucial to achievement in students and workers; they determine whether or not some genes are expressed, for good or ill.

In this provocative and persuasive new book, he asserts that the secret to high performance and satisfaction - at work, at school, and at home - is the deeply human need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and to do better by ourselves and our world.

Publisher's summary
Now, Goleman teams with renowned EI researchers Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee to explore the role of emotional intelligence in leadership. Unveiling neuroscientific links between organizational success or failure and "primal leadership," the authors argue that a leader's emotions are contagious. If a leader resonates energy and enthusiasm, an organization thrives; if a leader spreads negativity and dissonance, it flounders.
Drawing from decades of analysis, the authors show that resonant leaders excel not just through skill and smarts but also by connecting with others, using EI competencies such as empathy and self-awareness. And they employ up to six leadership styles - from visionary to coach to pacesetter - fluidly interchanging them as the situation demands. The program no leader in any walk of life can afford to miss, this unforgettable work transforms the art of leadership into the science of results.

The Master Coach is based on the simple but profound 3Cs Coaching Model. This proven approach asserts that to master the art of coaching one must have an exemplary character that invites the trust of others, be able to form rapid connections with others at a deeply personal level, and have the ability to initiate and guide intense, attitude-changing conversations. At every step, Thompson reminds listeners that coaching is not merely about what the coach says or does; it's about who he or she is.

We've all had experiences with two dramatically different types of leaders. The first type drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them and always need to be the smartest people in the room. These are the idea killers, the energy sappers, the diminishers of talent and commitment. On the other side of the spectrum are leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them.

True leadership isn't a matter of having a certain job or title. In fact, being chosen for a position is only the first of the five levels every effective leader achieves. To become more than "the boss" people follow only because they are required to, you have to master the ability to invest in people and inspire them. To grow further in your role, you must achieve results and build a team that produces. You need to help people to develop their skills to become leaders in their own right.

In this brilliant book, she describes how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. Overall, this relatively short title is sprinkled with interesting insights and ideas and was worth the time.
There is alot of info for managers of groups and primarily focuses on building relationships, how and when to use different managerial styles, and why Emotional Intelligence is becoming more and more important in the business environment. Perhaps it would have been more useful if I had read his first book about Emotional Intelligence. He makes reference to it quite often, which can be somewhat irritating if you havent read it.

I listen to audiobooks of subjects like this while following along with the hard copy book. I spent the preface and first chapter of this trying to find where the narrator jumped to. Sadly I wasted a credit on this version - d’oh. Pay attention to what you are getting. I Just got the 8hr version. Here’s hoping I can follow along better.

This audiobook will put you to sleep, guaranteed. The author, tries hard I guess, but I found it so monotonous and the subject matter not presented well. The stories are shallow and lack emotional connection.
