Publisher's summary

"Ashes of the Sun is fantasy at its finest" (Nicholas Eames, author of Kings of the Wyld)

Long ago, a magical war destroyed an empire, and a new one was built in its ashes. But still the old grudges simmer, and two siblings will fight on opposite sides to save their world in the start of Django Wexler's new epic fantasy trilogy.

Gyre hasn't seen his beloved sister since their parents sold her to the mysterious Twilight Order. Now, 12 years after her disappearance, Gyre's sole focus is revenge, and he's willing to risk anything and anyone to claim enough power to destroy the Order.

Chasing rumors of a fabled city protecting a powerful artifact, Gyre comes face-to-face with his lost sister. But she isn't who she once was. Trained to be a warrior, Maya wields magic for the Twilight Order's cause. Standing on opposite sides of a looming civil war, the two siblings will learn that not even the ties of blood will keep them from splitting the world in two.

Great start to an exciting new world

Wexler does not disappoint in the opening of a new trilogy. Any fan of his previous works will certainly enjoy this new endeavor. Crisp plot lends itself in establishing the new world that is being built around the two main POV characters. Looking forward to the next entry after a very satisfying opening.

Dang you Django

I used to do more construction and these types of books were no problem just listen all day and work. Now I started a business that I work and talk with people all day. The type of book where I get addicted and binge doesn’t work so good with production. This book has great characters. Long book seems like 3 hours long so fast. Fantastic book.

is this a YA novel?

Not sure if its the writing itself or the narration (maybe both?) but the characters (any character with dialog and especially pov characters) come off as incredibly juvenile...especially given their supposed training and life experience. feels like a ya novel. the overall story isn't bad though, just don't expect the shadow campaigns.

Narration terrible

I didn’t make it very far into this. I couldn’t. I am very lenient when it comes to audiobook narration, I’ve enjoyed a lot of audiobooks where the primary complaint on reviews were the narration, most of the time I can bear through it because I like the story. Not with this.

The narrator, like many have already said, reads the story as if she’s reading to a child at bedtime. It’s jarring, not just subtle. It ruins the atmosphere of the story and characters.

The story itself seems like it has some interesting aspects, but if I reread, I’ll buy the physical copy. This was too much for me to handle

If you’re a Star Wars fan… that doesn’t mean you’ll like this

I will preface this review by saying that I only got a 1/3 of the way through this book before returning it.
I went into this book being sold on the fact that “If you’re a Star Wars fan, you’ll love this book!” But that wasn’t the case for me. While it does have blasters and basically lightsabers, the general feel is not the same as Star Wars. It’s grittier which works for me in other books, such as The Shadow of the Gods, but not here.
The YA characters are insufferable for this book’s dark tone. And I couldn’t latch on to any of them. And I don’t wish to bash the narrator, but her interpretation of the character’s voices also had me annoyed with the characters.
But hey, give it a shot if you like Edgy, YA Star Wars. It’s just not for me.

Totally enjoyable ride!

I listened to this book in 3 days- something of a record for me and my busy life!

The plot captivated me and the narrator added immensely to the experience. I don't understand why some reviewers claimed the narrator was "juvenile" etc; we obviously have very different tastes.

Characterization was outstanding. Fully rounded and believable characters throughout
I will be anxiously awaiting the second book (please let there be a second book!) inthis series.

Ignore the few narrator complaints. She Rocks

I’m a Django Wexler fan, so his storytelling gets fives from me. That said, I couldn’t let those haters about the narrator go unanswered. Those complaining about her narrating “childishly “ obviously didn’t read ( ok, listen) past the first chapter ….which was about the two main characters when they were, wait for it…children.
Imogen Church is fantastic, whether she’s speaking as a child or an adult. Her talent paired with Mr Wexler’s equals excellence.
