Publisher's summary

There is but one aim: the summit, the summit of Mount Everest.

What starts with a trouble-free trek into the Nepalese highlands explodes into a gripping tale of hardship, peril, and adversity. Pushed beyond their physical and mental limits, climbers drop by the wayside. Their primal instincts for survival battle with their dogged resolve to drag themselves to the top of the world. But the focus remains: battle to the summit, and if successful, somehow get back down again.

White plunges the listener into a land of subzero temperatures, asphyxiating air, and ever-increasing danger. Base Camp and the Himalayan world above it come to life in this riveting, true novel. The inner workings of an Everest expedition team and what it takes to climb the world's highest mountain are laid bare. Some return from the death zone injured. Some do not return at all.

Success and failure vie for supremacy throughout.

This personal, day-by-day chronicle takes the listener along every step of an Everest climb. A must for climbing enthusiasts, lovers of adventure, and extreme sport junkies; the closing chapters will leave you breathless.

Wow! Read this before you yearn for Everest.

I’ve never thought climbing Everest looked appealing. This book tells in depth how it feels to do it. Painful, scary, stressful, hunger, thirst, and the list goes on. A great book and very different from other climbing books.

Riveting

Learned a lot from this book beyond any documentaries I've ever read or watched about climbing Mt. Everest. I couldn't put it down. The details were exceptional as was the narrator.

Excellent honest portrayal of a difficult climb

My son and I recently returned from a trek to Nepal to Everest base camp and subsequent climbing of nearby Island Peak.
Mr White’s description of his experience closely tracked ours for the trek up to base camp. I was therefore confident of the authenticity of his recounting of the Everest climb and its travails.
I appreciated his unvarnished account and his musing about the ambiguity of his accomplishment.

Couldn’t put it down

This book was a joy to listen to. The writing style, wit and reality made me hinge on every word. This is a must read if you want a real account of the emotions, physical demands, and drive needed to summit Everest.

Thrills, spills and chills

Very honest look at climbing Everest-which is not always romantic. Great detail. I have plans to listen to it again.

EXCELLENT! Hated to see it end!

My favorite book so far about Everest and I've read quite a few. This story fills in ALL the gaps and makes you feel as if you're right there with Fergus. I highly recommend this audio book!!

Amazing storytelling

Wow! I’ve read dozens of Everest adventure books. I listened to this as an audiobook. The narrator was fantastic. I just ordered a hard copy of this book. This stands among my two favorite books about Everest- into thin air being the other.

As if I was there on Everest

This is one of the best narratives I read of an ascent on Everest. The level of detail takes the reader with the climber so closely that the reader can get lost in the story. Fabulous I really enjoyed it.

Couldn’t put it down!

It starts off a little slow, but after 20 minutes I couldn’t stop listening! I really felt as if I were there on Everest. I finished the book in one day, at home, in the car running errands, etc. I have no idea what happened in current events yesterday because I was so engrossed in the story!
