The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson, Book 1 | [Rick Riordan]

The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson, Book 1

Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood. I never asked to be the son of a Greek God. I was just a normal kid, going to school, playing basketball, skateboarding. The usual. Until I accidentally vaporized my maths teacher. That's when things started really going wrong. Now I spend my time fighting with swords, battling monsters with my friends, and generally trying to stay alive. This is the one where Zeus, God of the Sky, thinks I've stolen his lightning bolt - and making Zeus angry is a very bad idea.

    "Fun, fun and more fun"

Selected this book based on the trailers of the up and coming movie. I was not disappointed. the book is fast paced adventure that does not bore you. It is filled with light-hearted humor. And the characters are likable and easy to relate to. Percy is a down-to- Earth typical teenager with the kinds of problems that most of us can understand, and then a few more. Loved the book so much i have moved into the rest of the series with wild abandon. The best so far since Harry Potter or Artemis Fowl

    "Outstanding!!"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson, Book 1 to be better than the print version?

Yes, I recall reading the print version in primary and I really did like it but never considered reading the other books. But when I listened to it I was hooked.

What did you like best about this story?

The action and adventure, the emotion. The precise use of greek mythology spun into it, all real myths.

    Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was when Percy, Grover and Sally were fighting their way to camp half-blood. It was action-packed, and very emotional.

    Any additional comments?

    I highly recommend this book.

    "Great Book"

This is a funny and witty book. The only fault is that all of a sudden it is over. There is no real finish, I checked out the audible manager looking for the final part?

    "Good Fun"

My little ADD/ASD girl is completely wrapped in this story and keeps pinching my ipod to play it. I think the narrator isn't as good as the narrator of the 39 clues but enjoyable all the same.

"Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief"

A brilliant story which will appeal to teenagers, young Percy Jackson is struggling at school with his dyslexic and ADHD if thats not enough his math teacher turns into a monster and trys to kill him!
This book is much better than the film. After listening to this I was pretty sure my dyslexic was because I was also a demi god!
A wonderful story which will inspire young minds!

"Lots of style, not a lot of substance"

The idea for this book was clever and I wanted to like it. I quickly got bored of the repetitive series of monsters that Percy just happens to keep running into though. I found myself tuning out.

I should say that I'm not the target audience. I'm in my 30s and looking for books with characters that my kids will love and admire. This isn't one of those - it's an action book with lots of fights with monsters. Kids will like it well enough for that, but it's a bit empty at heart.

One thing to be aware of is that many of the main characters in the book are the offspring of one night stands of greek gods who 'just can't help themselves' with pretty humans. It's not a major theme in the book, but it comes up several times because the kids are occasionally angsty about their parents. I felt it was a bit premature for a pre-teen book.

"Fantasy that an adult can be childlike to trust"
Would you consider the audio edition of The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson, Book 1 to be better than the print version?

never read the book - went straight to audio

What other book might you compare The Lightning Thief: Percy Jackson, Book 1 to, and why?

Hercules, Thor, loads of films where man works for Gods

Have you listened to any of Jesse Bernstein’s other performances? How does this one compare?

not listened to others but this was ok - bit too american for my taste

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Believe that man is as vital as any god

    Any additional comments?

Fun listening - but get it as a bargain price to get real enjoyment

    "A fun story"

A good book. Even if I'm not quite the target audience. Interesting and relatable characters. With more depth then I'm used to in book aimed at a younger age.

Story was gripping through out and I thoroughly enjoyed 'seeing' all the twists and turns as they happened. It even made gods and myths interesting in a way that I don't often see. I felt like I learned something even while enjoying myself. I would definitely pick up the next book in the series.

    Story
    "A Fantastic YA Series!"

This is the first book in the Percy Jackson series. I loved it!

Percy Jackson is a fantastic character. He is a normal young boy with a learning disability. Or is he? He finds out that he is really a demi-god and the son of Poseidon, but his life is about to get even more complicated when he is accused of stealing Zeus's lightning bolt. I really liked this young man. He is not necessarily the strongest person, but when faced with a God's wrath, he certainly is the bravest!

I have watched the movie, but had not read the book, so I decided to get a copy to read. I downloaded a copy in audio format so that I could listen to it whilst doing chores.

I started listening to it and was quickly pulled into the story. I began to really enjoy the tale, but it was a little strange to note all the differences between the movie and the actual book. I understand that making a movie out of a book is not necessarily the easiest thing to do - logistics and time etc., but there were whole scenes that were chopped out in the movie, and others written in that were not in the book. The narrator of the story, Jesse Bernstein, did a wonderful job reading the story and bringing the characters to life. I couldn't help but envision the characters as portrayed by the actors in the movie; it made it easier to imagine.
However, I may be the only one to say this, but I think I preferred the movie to the book. This is not my usual finding after watching a movie, and then reading the book the movie is based on. The book is a lot darker than the movie, and I liked the feeling the movie had. Nevertheless, the story was really engaging and I found myself listening intently. I am looking forward to continuing the series.

Rick Riordan has written a wonderful and exciting novel (and series) for children that brings the old Gods to life. The mythology has been well researched and presented in such a way as to be educational, but have a modern take that will appeal to today's young readers. His writing style is fast paced, but not rushed, and is easy for young readers to follow.

I highly recommend this book to young readers aged 12 to 16 and to adults who love reading Young Adult novels. - Lynn Worton

    "A Demi-God Revealed"

Meet Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon.

Apart from being good fun, this series is also a crash course in Greek mythology. You and your siblings will learn more from this than many a boring hour in dusty classrooms.

A brilliant history lecture, disguised as good fun.

    Story
"Its OK - not the best - but OK"

This is a relatively good story for children, I wanted to read it myself, before allowing my 9 year old to read, just to make sure the content was OK - and well, basically, it was - she did find it a bit scarey herself. However, what put me off the story was it being spoken in a very harsh American drawl (Jesse Bernstein). The content of the story though was, like I mentioned OK - its quite a good history lesson for children, lots of ancient names for them to look up and a bit of a history lesson for me too, which I do like in books, but it is basic, it seems to have a lot of Harry Potter influence in it, different sorts of magic and magic experiences brought into the 21st Century. If you are buying this audio book for a child, its relatively enjoyable, if you are buying for an adult, I would give it a miss.

"Didn't quite live up to expectations"

After watching the film one night i thought to myself "wouldn't this be a good idea for a book". so i was excited to see that it was in fact based... loosely on a book! Sadly, this audio book didn't quite live up to my expectations. The story itself is 'ok'. I had hoped for a bit more 'world' building, but that never materialised and kept to a very basic level. admittedly this might be ideal for a younger reader/listener, but for me it was a real disappointment. The final nail on in the coffin however was the narrator.
