The Behind the scenes Story of the network that Shaped a generation. SLIMED! is the first oral history to chronicle the surprisingly complex, wonderfully nostalgic, and impressively compelling story of Nickelodeon, the first kids’ network. Beginning as a DIY start-up in the late seventies, the network forged ahead through the early eighties with a tiny band of young artists and filmmakers, transforming itself into a cultural force in the late eighties and nineties that would change everything about cable television, television in general, animation, and children’s entertainment.
Compiled from hundreds of original interviews with writers, actors, producers, artists, and other Nick alumni, this is the incredible story of Nickelodeon straight from those who made it happen. Whether you’ve always wondered if Sam ever fell out of Clarissa’s window, what the real story was behind Ren & Stimpy, how an entire network was built on kids-first entertainment, or you just want to relive some of your favorite television memories, it’s time to get Slimed!

This is just a long LONG series of seemingly random quotes from people who worked at Nickelodeon in the 80's and 90's. The program gives a name and then a quote- over and over. No attempt is made to link any name to any program or role so if you don't recognize a name then you are out of luck. In fact, many of the quotes mention other names also without explanation and you have to try to figure out who these people are as well. I spent the entire book just trying to figure out who was being quoted and who was being talked about. From what I have pieced together the contributors are mainly directors, executives and actors. Again- all they give you is a name and a few sentences so the extreme majority of the time you have no idea what show or what era the line is related to and there is no pattern. Sometimes there will be a bunch of lines that mostly relate to "Are You Afraid of the Dark" followed by a bunch of lines that mostly relate to "Salute Your Shorts" but even these are not consistent blocks and the transitions are not announced.
AGAIN, I need to really drive this point home- there is NO commentary except a name and then a quote- and then a name and then a quote. You don't know if this is a child actor or a stage hand and because it is so very scrambled YOU CAN'T KNOW WHAT THE QUOTE IS ABOUT! Waste of time and money.
A real shame because with just a little effort it could have been fun instead of frustrating
It wasn't what I expected - I didn't listen past chapter 3 b/c it wasn't keeping my attention. He gave each cast member's view on different topics but I didn't follow the series enough to know the cast members- I was looking more for a story.
I will never by another book from Mathew Klickstein. Even from the foward, you are lost.
This book is extremely hard for follow if you don't remember who played Merv on Welcome Freshman, produced Pete and Pete, or the entire cast of You Can't Do That on Television. And keep in mind, most actors did not go on to bigger and better things, so googling them can be difficult. There are no introductions to each person being interviewed other than their name, and the author skips around shows and topics with no segway. I coudn't finish it.
The performance is fine, but an oral history doesn't take much performing.
There was no story to this book at all. It is just a bunch of quotes from people mashed together in a nonsensical way. I had no idea who any of the people were. They don't explain who they played on the shows. It just gives an actor's name and then they say something about a show they were on (and they don't even say what show that is for the most part). It was all very confusing. It is read by the same person, so it sounds like every quote is from the same person. It was just a mess. If all of these quotes were put together into a story of some sort, it may have been a good book. But, this is far from good.
While I enjoyed the book, I would only recommend this to my friends who watched a lot of late 80's/early 90's Nickelodeon. Anyone who doesn't know these shows well will have a hard time following who all the people are.
This history of Pete & Pete was awesome! I did not like the show as a kid, but the cast and crew's stories made me realize what an interesting show it was. The writers and musicians added to that conversation, too. I ended up watching a bunch of episodes of the show and realized I love it as an adult.
The book is just a collection of quotes from interviews with 80s and 90s Nick people. This was hard to listen to at first, but I went to YouTube and watched a few shows (even the opening credits would help) and put people with shows. The author does try to group the quotes thematically, so when many people are talking about a topic, they are probably from the same show. Be aware of this going in, but realize that the stories told her are definitely worth it! Also, the whole last 50 minutes is a run down of who everyone is and what their roles were on their respective shows.
I preordered this because I read something about this book on amazon. I'm only 2 and a half hours in and I'm just basking in this book. I love that there are still many hours to go because that means there's so much more information about Nickelodeon's most incredible era. I've always loved the golden age of Nickelodeon and this book includes actual comments from interviews with people that were apart of these shows whether they were behind the camera or in front of the camera. More light needs to be brought to the golden age of Nickelodeon because there truly has been nothing else like it since. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that is interested in this era of TV genius. I'll probably cry when it's over not even going to lie.
