Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this hilarious instant classic, the creator of The Mindy Project and Never Have I Ever invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood.“[Kaling is] like Tina Fey’s cool little sister. Or perhaps . . . the next Nora Ephron.”—The New York Times

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly! With several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? proves that Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

Praise for Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

“Where have you been all our lives, Mindy?”—Glamour

“Who wouldn’t want to hang out with Mindy Kaling? . . . [Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?] is like a mash note to comedy nerds.”—Time Out New York

“Very funny.”—Boston Globe

Not what I was expecting from her

Is there anything you would change about this book?

To be honest, she isnt what I expected. After reading Tina Feys Bossy Pants and Amy's Yes Please, I became hooked on female comedy writers stories. I like the shows shes in and or written for so i assumed I'd like Mindy... and at times I did... but for the most part her book is full of opinions that really make me feel like she is a spoiled person who thinks really highly of herself and doesnt respect the people who got her there.

Like parts where she just gets up and leaves works when she disagrees with the man who got her to where she was. With such a high and mighty attitude about it, and never really apologizes about it. Yet she bounces between, im just lazy and wanted to get by, yet im just an awesome amazing writer and person. Maybe its sarcasm or joking but her tone and the way she delivers doesnt come across that way...

Maybe she should of waited till she was older, then maybe she would have come off as more humble, wise, honest, less opinionated about boys and men, and funny... like Tina and Amy's books.

Over all this book made me dislike her...

Would you ever listen to anything by Mindy Kaling again?

I dont think so....

Which character – as performed by Mindy Kaling and Michael Schur – was your favorite?

Michael Shur

Do you think Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Any additional comments?

Mindy Kaling is kind of funny

Would you try another book from Mindy Kaling and/or Mindy Kaling and Michael Schur ?

I ordered this audio mostly because my boyfriend is a huge office fan and always refers to Mindy as a "funny broad." Well I agree, she's kind of funny. She's also kind of conceited, kind of annoying, and kind of boring. Every autobiography requires some self-deprication, and Mindy provides plenty. However, rather than own her growing pains, Mindy ends every unfortunate tale with a flip of her hair, and a "that's me and I love me and I'm awesome." That makes the book much less fun for readers/listeners. Her story is basically just about how she was a spoiled, rich girl who wanted to be a comedian and basically was persistent enough to make this happen. I spent most of the book wishing that I could be as self-delusional as her so that I maybe I could have forced my way into success as well. I did like that she narrated her own book, but the random interjections of the co-narrator, were awkward and too infrequent to make them go with the book's flow.

Humorous

Good story about how Mindy makes it in showbiz - mainly by creating her own work. If you find her character's voice on The Office annoying (and some people do) please note that Mindy narrates this book and you get her great voice for 4+ hours. I find her to have a great sense of humor and she has a great way of telling a story.

Funny and typically Mindy

If you love The Mindy Project, you’ll love this book! Funny, witty, but honest. Love that it’s narrated by Mindy herself.
