Publisher's summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In this hilarious instant classic, the creator of The Mindy Project and Never Have I Ever invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood.“[Kaling is] like Tina Fey’s cool little sister. Or perhaps . . . the next Nora Ephron.”—The New York Times

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly! With several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? proves that Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

Praise for Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

“Where have you been all our lives, Mindy?”—Glamour

“Who wouldn’t want to hang out with Mindy Kaling? . . . [Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?] is like a mash note to comedy nerds.”—Time Out New York

“Very funny.”—Boston Globe

Great easy listening

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes- I would recommend it to young women that want to hear funny insights on all things that girls think about.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)?

Mindy storming out of the Office writing session to get her nails done only to come back out of fear of getting fired.

What does Mindy Kaling and Michael Schur bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It's always better to hear it in her voice because it sounds like I'm just listening to one of my friends rambling on.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If I only had the time-- I would.

Any additional comments?

I would say its a book for young women-- not to say others won't enjoy it, but they may find the content immature and without direction.

Cute but not hilarious

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Probably not. Some sections are funny , most is missed comedy. Mindy Kaling although fun on TV, does not come through in her own book. It's all somewhat flat!

What other book might you compare Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) to and why?

none

What does Mindy Kaling and Michael Schur bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

nothing, someone else should have read the book

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

no

Super!

What took me song long to catch this funny book? Read/listen as soon as you can. I was already a big fan but I love Mindy even more for having listened to this.

Fun, light read

This book was definitely entertaining, but not necessarily a "must read". Mindy is fun to listen to however, and if you are a lover of The Office, there are fun references and behind the scenes stories here and there.

Some problematic language but still a fun read.

All in all, this book was a fun read; no real depth but nice to put on while you're cleaning. There is definitely some problematic language in the book but I'm hoping to her next book will not have the same issue.

A Good Listen

Any additional comments?

This was a good listen. You'll get to know Mindy on a different level than the character of Kelly. Not that I ever thought Mindy would be anything thing like her character on The Office, but she is much more dynamic. Mindy is obviously a talented writer, and listening to this book, rather than reading, really helped the performance part of it come across. Mindy is a great narrator and grabs you with her story (although Micheal Schur's random interjections didn't quite fit in for me).

Worth the listen.

stepmothers also welcome

I love the first chapter that indicates that this book would only be purchased by those who only "kinda understand" since it sounds like a challenge. It makes this book more acceptable to those that have not yet experienced the "mean kids" LOL...that's not true...we all have even if we were the cool kids. Sometimes we are the "mean kids" to ourselves. It's a bit more swearing than I would like but I will still let my daughter listen.

Mindy fans will love this book.

Very narrow focus. I want a pilot script for a TV sitcom. Call it "Growing Up with Immagrint parents." Think Goldbergs. Audio book would be fine. Develop the parent characters.

Hysterical - made me a real fan of Mindy

Would you consider the audio edition of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) to be better than the print version?

Yes, listening to her deliver her own emotions and jokes make a big difference.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Luck and white male confidence - how I was able to do whatever I wanted
