Publisher's summary

For pilot Ruth Nichols, a soaring rivalry with Amelia Earhart becomes a deep friendship in a short story of the danger and secrets of undaunted women, inspired by true events, by New York Times bestselling author Marie Benedict.

It’s Ruth’s dream to be the world’s greatest female pilot. It’s Amelia—Lady Lindy herself—who achieves it. At first competitors, Ruth soon recognizes they share a passion for the skies and for supporting trailblazing female pilots everywhere. Together they form an all-women flying group, the Ninety-Nines, and over the years their achievements become more groundbreaking, their risks more personal, and their friendship closer than ever, until the day their best-laid plans come crashing down.

Marie Benedict’s Amelia’s Shadow is part of Blaze, a collection of short stories about incendiary women across the decades who dare to defy convention. They can be read or listened to in one sitting.

Well read

A fun listen… I wanted more! I wish Benedict had written a full length book about Amelia!

A Sweet Story

A sweet short-story by one of my favorite authors about a "what if" storyline to the life of Amelia Earhart. Nicely read by the narrator.

A kind and personal short

What a lovely short about the early days of women in flight. Does a wonderful job of personalizing and humanizing what can offer be presented as dry or statistic-laden. It accomplishes the very thing these pilots of the day had to fight for: to be seen as people, fully capable and experts in their own right. A brief, kind, informative walk through a vital part of history.

Different viewpoint

Had never heard anything like what is suggested in this short story. Makes me want to find out more about Amelia.

Reality v Imagined

This is for both the Audible and the ebook

Reality vs Imagined

I loved this book. It's even more poignant knowing how Ms Nichols story tragically ended. I loved how it explored the friendship and sometime rivalry between Amelia and Ruth. Especially
the twist that Amelia and Ruth may have planned her disappearance in order to escape A else's marriage to her disreputable husband. I only wish it was longer.

Good Read

This audiobook definitely kept me intrigued all the way till the following Ruth who at once hated Amelia for doing something she wanted to be the first to do then end up following in love after being saved by her.

Love it!

I loved the story from another side of Amelia Earhart’s disappearance. It is so awesome to imagine the what ifs and stories around a historical event.

Learned something new

This was a cute short story. I don't know much about Ruth Nichols, nor Amelia Earnhart besides the fact that they are aviators and Earnhart crashed and wasn't found. I enjoyed the interaction between the two main characters and the women empowerment theme. This short story makes me want to look deeper into both women.

Fascinating

This is a short book based on a real-life story. It is the 1st of 7 in a series I stumbled upon, and I am not disappointed.

In a time when women fought for most any type of respect or equality, being a pilot was something not looked upon kindly as a woman's place with many men thinking it too difficult as well for a woman to understand.

This story tells us many more about the already famous Amelia Earhart, but as the title suggests, she has a shadow. I found it fascinating to learn of not only another pioneering woman pilot, but also of a bond made by the women along with other things they did to help strengthen the way for women pilots and how the bond forged between the two developed so close all the way until Amelia's last days when she disappeared.

Unknown story

History is being re-written in the correct way. It is important to understand that there are still several theories surrounding her death. She was larger than life. This is a very interesting story.
