Publisher's summary

Hyperthyroidism is a term that simply means a person has developed an overactive thyroid gland. The metabolism of a person with hyperthyroidism is sped up from too much thyroid hormone in their system, so that everything in the body is running at overdrive. When this happens, the person will experience hyperthyroid symptoms.

The vast majority of people with hyperthyroidism (95%) experience Graves' disease as the cause. This is an autoimmune disease caused by antibodies created by the immune system that attach to the thyroid gland and stimulate it to produce excessive amounts of hormone. Graves' disease and other causes of hyperthyroidism are addressed as well as detailed discussion on symptoms diagnosis and treatments.

This audiobook is not intended to be an extensive manual but is intended to contain information most often sought by laypersons on the subject.

Clear explanation

Very good breakdown of the disease. After months of adrenaline rushes, heart palpitations, severe panic attacks, diarrhea, intolerance to heat, restlessness, high anxiety and depression, I was finally diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. My family thought it was in my head and so did my psychiatrist who helped me the first time I had a similar crisis after the birth of my son ( I was diagnosed with postpartum depression). This time, no anti anxiety medication or antidepressants worked. As a matter of fact , my body tolerated none for more than 4 days, manifesting severe insomnia and and suicidal thoughts. Luckily, my medical background helped me seek answers after going from Dr. to Dr. It led to proper testing and finally a diagnosis after almost 9 months of what I describe as hell on earth. I decided not to read too much on the disease until my mind was stable again. I found this book to be exactly what I need at this point of the journey to healing. Luckily I only needed medication and in a short period of time, almost all my symptoms subsided. The audio book is understandable and can be very helpful in knowing what is happening in your body while having this disease. It also gives hope in explaining clearly the options for treatment depending on the severity of disease.
