Publisher's summary

The popular, powerful guide to help parents regain control over a defiant child or teenager...

Occasional clashes between parents and children are not uncommon, but when defiant behavior-including tantrums, resistance to chores, and negativity-becomes chronic, it causes big problems within the family. In 10 Days to a Less Defiant Child, family and child psychologist Dr. Jeffrey Bernstein shares a groundbreaking 10-day program to help parents understand their child's behavior and regain control of their household.

In this updated edition, parents will learn how to face new challenges, including defiance resulting from excessive technology use (even to the point of addiction) and the stress of modern family life. Dr. Bernstein explains what causes defiance in kids and why it's so destructive to the family, then offers parents a step-by-step guide on how to reduce conflict and end upsetting behaviors.

Insightful Read

One of my favorite for spirited and defiant boys, great read that provided scientific background to behaviors we have been struggling with.

Mostly Valuable, some of it too clinical for all

It took me a while to get through this. I was determined, so it happened. I did skip over some. I have a little background in Psych including with children and adolescents... and even I thought there was a bit too much on the clinical side for the average parent. Loads of information and case histories if you are looking for relateable stories. Overall, I recommend. I am not sorry I bought- I will certainly re-listen to gleen more from the lessons and skip what isn't helpful next time... I suspect the printed version would have been a better investment for the average person (read- civilian, non-medical/psych background) Still a valuable resource overall.

Ignore the 10 days suggestion

Ignoring the clickbait "10-days" title, it's a good book. The narrator has a nice voice, and I was able to listen comfortably at a speed of 1.20.

Fantastic book

This is the type of book I would revisit again and again. It came at the perfect time for me as a parent with my teenage son. He not only explains the psychology behind the actions of defiant kids and teens, but also which interactions and discipline methods can either exacerbate the issues or genuinely guide both you and your child. The author presents the information in a logical, easy to implement way, with various examples, and I often found myself going back and re-listening to different excerpts because so many applied to my situation. If you are truly interested in teaching and guiding your defiant child in order for them to have an increased understanding and better control over their actions, rather than trying to control them with the traditional, go-to “punitive” approach.

It has helpful tips and ways to look at situations

This book does have a few helpful tips on how to react to your child with defiant disorder. It does give you a few good ways to look at situations differently. It has a lot of stories that mostly didn't describe my current situation so it was a lot of time that I eventually learned to skip over. In some areas it is redundant and some of that could have probably been taken out.

monotone narrator but amazing content

I found myself falling asleep because the narrator's voice was so monotone. the content of the book overall was very useful but recommend changing to somebody who has expressiveness in their voice.

Good content, monotone reader

It is challenging getting through this book when it is sooo monotone. I bumped the speed up to 1.45x and that helped. If you get past that, the content is alright.

Great book

This book helped me to gain insight about my ODD daughter. It made me feel like someone does understand how difficult this is and made me feel like I’m not alone. He uses a range of ages from young child to teen to share relatable experiences that you can learn from. I especially appreciated the section dedicated to electronics. I definitely don’t feel like we can fix our problems in 10 days, but we have had a series of small victories in our home because of this book. I plan on listening again.
