あらすじ
目羅博士の不思議な犯罪
探偵小説の筋を考えていた私は、上野の動物園でふと妙な人物に出会う。
男は私の正体に気付き、愛読者であると告白した。そして、自分の体験した不思議な経験談を話し始める。
「彼」がかつて住んでいた裏手の「峡谷」はビルディングとビルディングのおりなす人工的な谷であった。二つのビルディングは峡谷側だけがどこからどこまで寸分違わぬ作りになっていたのである。この「峡谷」の五階の北の端の窓で首吊り自殺があり、しかもそれが、時を隔てて三度も繰り返された。
三人目の犠牲者を偶然見つけてしまった「彼」は、恐れおののいてその場を立ち去ろうとした時に、向かいの建物の窓から人間の顔が覗いていたことに気付く。
こちらを見てその顔はニヤリと笑った。
後日、「彼」は警察署で医学博士の目羅博士に出会う。博士こそが、あの時向かいの建物からのぞいたあの顔だと気付いた「彼」は……
