I Could Listen to Her Read the Phone Book
After listening to Lansens' novel The Girls, I had fallen in love with the way she told a story, so I was eager to read Rush Home Road. From the moment I popped my headphones in my ears and I was audibly hugged by the beautiful voice of Ruby Dee, I was hers - hook, line, and sinker. Her deep, intelligent, caring, and wise voice made everything all better. It made everything sound so beautiful and brought Lansens' text alive. Years after hearing Aaaaaddyyy in the drawn out tone of little Sharla I still get all warm inside. Ruby Dee could read the phone book and make it sound wonderful; but listening to her read Rush Home Road, I never wanted my time with her to end. The text itself is rich in detail, and a beautiful story, I found myself crying without knowing it, and laughing out loud too. It's been a few years since I listened to the book for the first time, but sometimes I re-listen - just to feel like I've reconnected with an old friend and found myself a place where I can rest my worries and feed my heart and soul.
Suspense Till the Last Page
Test Having listened to over 20 audible books, nothing has come close to the experience of Ice Limit, the very first. Scott Brick is the best narrator there is. And Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child, long time co-authors, know how to tell a story that holds you in suspense till the last page.
Inspiring Story Time
I first read this book while I was traveling abroad and couldn't stop thinking about it and suggesting it to others to the point that I just kept giving my copy away and buying myself another. At work one day I told my friend about it and he suggested looking to see if it was in audiobook form. To my delight we found it and immediately downloaded and listened to it during the day. Being that the book is only 4 hours it's very satisfying and moving. It can change the course of your day or your whole life. Jeremy Irons has a terrific voice and storytelling ability that it makes the story come to life even more. This is a wonderful story that I can't recommend enough.
What an Enjoyment
I have to say I enjoyed this book from start to finish. The narrator does a wonderful job and keeps you interested during the story. It's very hard for me to sit down to read a book with a reading disorder - dyslexia - without getting frustrated and disappointed in myself for not sticking to it. So I turned to Audible, and all the books I have ever had interest in are available to my ears. I can't express how much I enjoy listening to books now, I missed out on so much and it's been wonderful catching up. I now have over 70 books in my library and every day I have my iPhone playing a book. Thank you so much for bringing the written word to life. It has giving me a chance to read without difficulty.
Laughed Until I Cried
What a way to begin what is now years of audiobook listening! I must have looked like a fool driving while laughing so hard I had tears running down my face! I now know that most authors are awful narrators, but not Sedaris (or Bill Bryson, BTW). This is the only audiobook I have listened to more than once, and it still makes me laugh.
My first (and still my best)
My introduction to Audible began with this recommendation from friends. I downloaded this for a car trip from Austin, Texas to my native Minneapolis and was floored the moment I listened to the narrative of World War Z. It's simply a gripping story about post-apocalypse Earth told by Max Brooks and a riveting cast - THIS IS A MUST DOWNLOAD FOR ANY SCIENCE FICTION ENTHUSIAST!!! I cannot possibly give enough praise to justify the awesomeness of this book.
Too Good to Put Away!
My husband and I are long haul commercial drivers. I have the night shift, graveyard. I listen to audible books to help the night go by faster. My shift is usually 11 hours straight. This series is one of the best! My shift had ended and I just couldn't put the ipod down! I pulled in a parking spot at the rest area and kept quiet so I could finish the chapter! This is a great series. I can't wait until the next book comes out next year! I recommend this series to all my friends.
Listening Is More About the Narrator
I love to read. But, like so many of you, I find it difficult with four children, work, etc... to read all I would like. This is how I got into Audible. The thing I learned is that audiobooks are greatly (if not dependent) upon the narrator. I recommended this book for two reasons. First, it is an excellent book. Second, it will introduce you to one of the best (if not the best) audiobook narrators in the business. Scott Brick brings the story to life. Enjoy!
