Teens trapped in futility
From the beginning, there is a forecast of futility, but the hopes of escape from the dire circumstances are going to come to nothing. Winslow adroitly encapsulates a mood of the era into the circumstances and actions of a small group of friends and then describes how the friendship and their shared dream is not enough to make it through.

Some dreams never come true and maybe were never meant to be
