Resumen del Editor

OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK * INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * “Stunning.” —People * “Dazzling yet devastating...Tóibín is simply one of the world’s best living literary writers.” —The Boston Globe * “Momentous and hugely affecting.” —The Wall Street Journal *

From the beloved, critically acclaimed, bestselling author comes a spectacularly moving novel featuring Eilis Lacey, the complex and enigmatic heroine of Brooklyn, Tóibín’s most popular work in twenty years.

Eilis Lacey is Irish, married to Tony Fiorello, a plumber and one of four Italian American brothers, all of whom live in neighboring houses on a cul-de-sac in Lindenhurst, Long Island, with their wives and children and Tony’s parents, a huge extended family. It is the spring of 1976 and Eilis is now forty with two teenage children. Though her ties to Ireland remain stronger than those that hold her to her new land and home, she has not returned in decades.

One day, when Tony is at work, an Irishman comes to the door asking for Eilis by name. He tells her that his wife is pregnant with Tony’s child and that when the baby is born, he will not raise it but instead deposit it on Eilis’s doorstep. It is what Eilis does—and what she refuses to do—in response to this stunning news that makes Tóibín’s novel so riveting and suspenseful.

Long Island is a gorgeous story “about a woman thrashing against the constraints of fate” (Maureen Corrigan, Fresh Air). It is “a wonder, rich with yearning and regret” (Star Tribune, Minneapolis).

Splendid! But…

The story is riveting, the prose is majestic, Jessie Buckley’s reading is stellar…BUT the very second the last sentence is read, the listener is launched — no, CATAPULTED— into an interview with Buckley about what she thinks about the book and her feelings about reading it. Jeez, give a listener a moment to take in the ending of the tale, the beauty of the closing lines, the nuance of the reader’s performance! I tried to go back and have that experience over the last lines of the book, but my finger isn’t fast enough to press pause before the cloying voice of the interviewer comes in to introduce Jessie Buckley and they start yammering about her performance of the book. Quite jarring after such a delicate, sad story. Simon & Schuster Audio, give us a break (literally!) next time!

Ending?

I'm with everyone else. The ending ruined the rest of the book for me. I was so involved and so invested and then? Nothing. The narration was top notch. The characters well developed but if you can't do better than that to resolve your story line you're in the wrong business.

Will there be a book 3

I really enjoyed this follow up book to Brooklyn. Even though I hadn't read the first book, I had seen the movie and loved it. I did discover that the movie was slightly different that the first book because in the book she has a larger family that wasn't shown in the movie. I was quite disappointed with the ending as I like a nice tidy wrap up. Hopefully there will be a book 3 so I can find out what happens and not have to use my imagination.

the mystery from moment to moment

I would've liked to have known how this story actually ends and how the various characters dealt with their closures.

Characters

A great read! I read Brooklyn first and enjoyed the continued story. But could be read as a stand alone.

Life of an Immigrant

The book was very slow. I found it hard to believe that the character s really didn’t contemplate how their actions would affect others.

Long Island

Long Island is beautiful, funny and heartbreaking in its realness. So beautifully crafted.
The narration was beyond any other I’ve heard. Jesse Buckley is incredibly talented and brings you on the journey relentlessly and fully and never lets up.
