  • "Thoroughly entertaining!"

    Overall

I loved this book so much that I didn't want to turn it off. I was listening to it while hiking at the mountain and I got some amused looks when passers-by saw me laughing out loud. It's funny, interesting, insightful and honest. My only disappointment is that it ended.

In one year Julia Sweeney got a divorce (amicable), bought a small bungalow in Hollywood, and looked forward to a life that said, "Here dwells a happily single young woman!" But then the axe fell. Her younger brother, Mike, was diagnosed with terminal cancer and moved in with her. Her parents came to be with Mike and moved in with her, too. Julia was now on seriously intimate terms with the people she had spent half a lifetime growing up away from.

That stammer. Those basset-hound eyes. That bone-dry wit. There has never been another comedian like Bob Newhart. In this, his first audiobook ever, Newhart gives his brilliant and bemused twist on a multitude of topics, including flying, the trials of a family holiday in a Winnebago, and more serious subjects, such as golf. And, of course, there are side-splittingly funny stories from his life and career. Who else has a drinking game named after him? ("Hi, Bob!")

Nadine's greatest hits:
  • Dad Is Fat

    "Sometimes You Gotta Laugh!"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story
What did you love best about Dad Is Fat?

If you've ever heard an audiobook read by the author, especially one about their own life, it can sometimes seem annoying. Like they're trying to make you think what they think is the right way - the normal way. Jim Gaffigan doesn't do that. All he does is tell you about himself, and, maybe, some others like him, and I love that! His imperfections and all are personal, informative, and funny - True Gaffigan!

The other great thing is he reads his book just like his act only slightly quieter and calmer which makes it enjoyable listening to it on my commute. I'm sure the drivers next to me think I'm crazy cracking up laughing in my car at such calm words.

    Any additional comments?

I'm not a parent, and I still found this hilarious and calming!

  • Attempting Normal

"One Comedian's Life Can Be Interestingly Complex!"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story
If you could sum up Attempting Normal in three words, what would they be?

    honest ... complex ... informative

What aspect of Marc Maron’s performance would you have changed?

Mr. Maron reads a little fast. Perhaps that's how he does his stand-up so maybe I'm the silly one judging him on how he does his regular routine with a unique comedic timing. Yet, I felt every chapter was genuinely something he endured through his life. Perhaps, he simply read with genuine passion.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I didn't want to listen to it all in one sitting only because I'm a commute-driving/daily workout audiobook listener who works an already overly stimulating job, and this book was quite a lot in one sitting. However, Mr. Maron was fascinating in pieces! For those who have less stimulating lives, this audiobook will really get you thinking.

    Any additional comments?

The lives of comedians are very perplexing to me, and yet, somehow I always wanted to know more about them. Mr. Maron did just that! While telling us all about his life, he told me about the lives of the best comics, and I appreciated that. But if Mr. Maron has any other books, I'll definitely get them, but it'll be in book-form - words on paper - that is.

  • Self-Inflicted Wounds: Heartwarming Tales of Epic Humiliation

"I think we're best friends that just haven't met!"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story
If you could sum up Self-Inflicted Wounds in three words, what would they be?

    honest, funny, and goal-oriented

What about Aisha Tyler’s performance did you like?

Sometimes you listen to comedians do their own audiobook, and you'd almost swear they were reading each word one-by-one articulating harshly. Not Aisha. She reads like this is her story and so every word naturally flows ... with a comedic twang!

    Any additional comments?

The self-inflicted wounds probably aren't what you're thinking. They're wounds we all cause ourselves, not extreme disasters. Instead, Aisha mixes funny and life into one and makes it instructive ... But the best part is it doesn't FEEL instructive - just like fun!

  • Bossypants

"Read the book, and STILL LOVED the audiobook!"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story
Would you consider the audio edition of Bossypants to be better than the print version?

I'm not going to say that the audiobook was better than the print version, but there's nothing like hearing Tina tell her own story! And the clips of SNL just make everything even better!

    Any additional comments?

Perhaps this doesn't matter to most, but I appreciate that Tina still managed to tell her whole life story and, yet, only minimally talked about her husband and children. Sometimes you can say a lot with every little if you do it right.

  • "Great observational story telling, ..."

    2 of 2 helpful votes

My previous experience with David Sedaris' work was When You Are Engulfed in Flames, and after a few months my memory of it was that it was good. After having spent some time on other types of books, I was ready for a few laughs and thought I'd try another of David Sedaris' books.

In this book he again related his personal experiences, most of which were filled with angst. I didn't get to smile or laugh much during this audio book because the stories weren't funny, but they were great 'human experience' stories.

A few were disturbing and I couldn't relate to them because of certain belief systems I am currently operating under. I had a knot in my gut while listening to him recall the teenage boy slumber party with strip poker where another teenage boy had to sit on his lap naked. Or his recollections of panhandling as a teen in order to buy things. And, the story of the elevator ride with the young boy was too long and again full of angst.

So, the stories are great, but maybe not for everyone. And, this is certainly not one to buy if you are looking for cheerful and funny comedy to lighten your heart.

For that I would recommend some of Patrick McManus' story telling. Even though I have no interest in hunting or fishing, his stories are funny and clean and leave me with a positive feeling. After listening to Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, I didn't feel clean or happy or lightened, just the opposite.

God Is Disappointed in You is for people who would like to read the Bible...if it would just cut to the chase. Stripped of its arcane language and interminable passages, every book of the Bible is condensed down to its core message, in no more than a few pages each. Written by Mark Russell with cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Shannon Wheeler, God Is Disappointed in You is a frequently hilarious, often shocking, but always accurate retelling of the Bible, including the parts selectively left out by Sunday School teachers.

There is a tragic epidemic going on around us - a dreadful disconnect between human beings and the real world we live in. We are paying frightfully little attention to our real-world surroundings. We are addicted to digital devices. It's time for us to swallow a healthy dose of reality and find balance between our digital lives and our flesh-and-blood relationships. Steve Krupnik's satirical analysis of "digital junkies" makes a clear case that technology is advancing much more rapidly than its users.

Six BBC TV episodes starring Rowan Atkinson, Miranda Richardson, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, and Tony Robinson. With a “ya boo sucks” to you Fritzy, hot tiddly tumble - it’s off to the Western Front, 1917. Captain Blackadder, hero of Mboto Gorge, joined the British Army when it was little more than a travel agency for gentlemen with an abnormally high sex drive. Now he finds himself crammed into a sewer, 20 yards from a lot of heavily armed people who want to kill him.
