This is another book that I will listen to again and again. I bought this one because it was a best seller, having never watched her on SNL and watched 30 rock a handful of times I wasn't sure what to expect. This has changed me into a 30 Rock fan as well as a Tina Fey fan and I really hope she writes another book!

If you are a huge Jen Lancaster fan like me (read all her books (sometimes twice), read ALL of her blog entries (again with the sometimes twice), I have even gone to a book signing, you are going to be a little disappointed to recognize ALOT of the stories that are in this book. I love hearing her read them but because I have already read them myself (sometimes twice...ok alot of times twice) I feel like I am hanging out with a friend who is telling me the same stories over and over and when she starts one I'm like, "Do I stop her and tell her I have heard this or be polite and just let her tell me again?"

That's the ONLY reason for the 3 stars.

If you are new to Jen or are maybe less familiar with her work ....you will love this!

In Such a Pretty Fat, Jen Lancaster learned how to come to terms with her body. In My Fair Lazy, she expanded her mind. Now, the New York Times best-selling author gives herself - and her generation - a kick in the X, by facing her greatest challenge to date: acting her age. Jen is finally ready to put away childish things (except her Barbie Styling Head, of course) and embrace the investment-making, mortgage-carrying, life insurance-having adult she's become.

Anyone who saw an episode of Saturday Night Live between 1999 and 2006 knows Rachel Dratch. She was hilarious! So what happened to her? After a misbegotten part as Jenna on the pilot of 30 Rock, Dratch was only getting offered roles as "Lesbians. Secretaries. Sometimes secretaries who are lesbians." Her career at a low point, Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog- sitting, learning Spanish - and dating. After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose?

Emily's greatest hits:
  • Fawlty Towers, Volume 1: Basil the Rat

"From TV to radio, it still keeps you laughing"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

In addition to being brilliantly funny, Fawlty Towers is, at times, a very physical comedy with lots of visual gags (think of the German marching walk and the business with the moose head). They've neatly solved this problem by having the episodes narrated by Manuel, the Spanish waiter (Andrew Sachs). These voice-overs make it clear what's happening, but those who are very familiar with the show might find them unnecessary. There are also discussions with writer and performer John Cleese before each episode, which are well worth listening to if you're a fan and are after some extra insight and knowledge about the show and its creation, but also slightly give away some of the events in the upcoming show (but they don't ruin them at all).

The episodes remain hysterically funny, but also painfully awkward, as they were on first viewing on the BBC. Brilliant work, and well worth a listen to revisit the good (and not so good) folks of Torquay.

  • Fawlty Towers, Volume 3: The Psychiatrist

  • Art

"A play about a painting that works as an audiobook"

    Overall
    Performance
    Story

This audiobook is all about a piece of art. One man bought it and his two friends (and the purchaser himself) talk about it. And argue about it. And each other. It's a brilliant commentary on modern art, art culture and consumption. The actors are well cast, creating fully founded characters to life with flair and skill. Their monologues carry the action along without being annoying or distracting. Buy this audiobook for some sophisticated (and some unsophistcated) laughs about art and modern culture.

  • "Your new Aunt Bee"

    11 of 12 helpful votes

I'm a fan of the Daily Show, and I've liked Samantha Bee (especially when she wears that sexy retainer), but I wasn't expecting to love her book as much as I did. I was prepared for yet another collection of 'funny' observations - but that's not what "I Know I Am..." is. It's a genuine memoir of a non-traditional childhood, and the picture it paints was familiar to me in many ways. If you've lived a few decades, they'll likely be familiar to you too. Her stories of growing up in three different households are the very opposite of truth-y. They are genuinely funny, in a way that is real. I'd even say important. Oh! I am seriously going to have to use these two words: Uplifting. Healing. (But not in a gay way.)
If your life sucks right now - you should make her your new Aunt Bee and buy it. If you think your life might suck later, just buy it now so you're ready.

Critics have called her “sweet, adorable, and vicious.” But there is so much more to be said about Samantha Bee. For one, she’s Canadian - whatever that means. And now, she opens up for the very first time about her checkered Canadian past. With charming candor, she admits to her Lennie from Of Mice and Men-style love of baby animals, her teenage crime spree as one-half of a car-thieving couple, and the fact that strangers seem compelled to show her their genitals.
