Zachary Tumin is Adjunct Professor at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, named twice as one of SIPA’s top 5 teachers for his courses in public management, organizational behavior, and information and communications technologies. Zach was appointed to SIPA in 2016 while serving on Police Commissioner Bill Bratton’s executive staff at the New York Police Department. That capped a long and distinguished career in industry and government, beginning in Boston on the staff of Mayor Kevin H. White. In New York, Zach served as District Attorney Elizabeth Holtzman’s Special Assistant for policy and planning. He later led the Information Services Division for the New York State Organized Crime Task Force; and served as executive director of the New York City public schools’ Division of School Safety, comprising the nation’s seventh largest police force. He is past executive director of the New York-based Financial Services Technology Consortium, an industry R&D collaborative of 80 financial institutions and technology firms building new digital banking services. In addition to his service in industry and government, Zach served for a decade in senior research roles at Harvard Kennedy School, most recently as Special Assistant to the Director and Faculty Chair at the Belfer Center’s Program in Science, Technology and Public Policy, the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, the Program in Strategic Computing and Telecommunications in the Public Sector, and the Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management. He is an alumni Fellow of the Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard. Zach is a frequent speaker and presenter at corporate and government events and conferences. He is the author of numerous award-winning Harvard teaching cases, as well as reports and articles for such publications as Harvard Business Review and Forbes. Zach is co-author (with William Bratton) of Collaborate Or Perish! Reaching Across Boundaries in a Networked World, published by Crown/Broadway Business in 2012. Zach earned his BA cum laude in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania, his Master's in Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and his Master's in Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School.
