From whatever past karmic alliances and associations, my spirit this go-round was somehow aligned to be a priest. In point of fact, being a priest and having an interest in Zen Buddhism is not an anomaly: witness the life of Trappist Monk and priest-writer, Thomas Merton; or the fine scholars of Buddhology like Fr. Etienne Lamotte and Heinrich Dumoulin, S.J. My spiritual path reflects the teachings of the ancient Daoists who stated that one ought to embrace familial and social commitments (like my own embrace of the duties of the exoteric church) when they are young, but that when they reach middle-age and beyond (I’m now retired at 66 due to ongoing health issues) the “inner-path” (or inner-light) needs to become the primary focus. Suffice to say that my inner-spiritual-life is now devoted to UnbornMind Zen with a special emphasis upon the sacred text of the Lankavatara Sutra; hence my dharma name, Vajragoni. As Lankavatarians, our foundation is based on the ancient mantra, “What the Mind focuses on determines its Reality”; in league with Cittamatra, or the Mind Only school of Zen Buddhism. I now live the life of an eremitical ascetic monk of the Lankavatarian path. Since its inception in 2011 we have a blog, UnbornMind Zen, revolving around Buddhist themes, scriptures and associated spiritualities. Our publications include a selection of books that cater to various interests and spiritual practices. These books encompass a range of topics, such as literature, philosophy, and spirituality. Among our recent releases, we have The Unborn Odyssey, a captivating novel that takes readers on a thought-provoking journey. Additionally, we offer The Yogasūtras of Patañjali: An Unborn Mind Translation and Commentary, which provides a comprehensive understanding of this ancient text and its relevance in today's world. For those seeking a deeper exploration of the mystical, we have The Cloud of Unknowing in Light of the Unborn, a profound work that sheds light on Contemplation in light of the Unborn teachings. Furthermore, we offer The Dharmakaya Sutra, a singular scripture that is a real authentic breakthrough in genuine mystical Zen Buddhism and The Dhammapada in Light of the Unborn, an interpretation as seen through the Mystical Light of the Unborn Buddha Mind.
