Roz Southey is a historian and musician who writes about the north-east of England where she lives and works; her stories have been praised for their strong sense of place. She is the author of a number of short stories and novellas, and of the Charles Patterson Mysteries, historical crime books set in eighteenth-century Newcastle upon Tyne – books that have been described as immersed in the tastes, sights and sounds of the 18th century, alternately thrilling and chilling. Set amongst the rich and the poor of an industrial city, Charles Patterson struggles to make a living as a musician despite being snubbed by the ladies and gentlemen on whom he depends, until he discovers that he has an unexpected talent at unravelling crimes and catching murderers. And there’s a touch of the paranormal which surprises and tantalises with a view of a different world altogether … REVIEWS OF THE CHARLES PATTERSON SERIES. ‘Keen attention to detail, sharply drawn characters, and seamless blending of historical fact and imaginative fiction.’ Booklist on The Ladder Dancer. ‘With hints of the paranormal, this unusual historical series just keeps getting better … For readers who like a bit of the unusual.’ Library Journal Starred Review of Sword and Song.
