Hooper, born Rita Marie Bartlett, grew up near Berkeley, California, the epicenter of counterculture in the late 1960s. The daughter of restaurant and music club owners, she often fell asleep in the back room to the soulful strains of bluesy guitars and the thumping heartbeat of drums. Rita Bartlett's love of all things artistic blossomed as a result of the magnetic blues movement combined with dazzling innovations in movies and literature. For several years, her creative journey took her to the world of film and television, where she worked alongside her former husband AMPAS film director Willard Tobe Hooper. With the publication of her accomplished debut novel, The Cuban, Rita Hooper fulfills a lifelong dream of capturing the romance and rhythm of remarkable times as only Rita Hooper can.
