In 1991, he moved to Nashville, TN to pursue a music career with one of his three brothers and later quit the duo to start a construction business and raise a family. Patrick wrote a screenplay, Letters to God, which was inspired by his son, Tyler Doughtie. The story was developed from his son's journey with cancer. At age 7, Tyler was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive brain tumor called Medulloblastoma. He underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy at St. Jude Children's Research hospital in Memphis, TN over an 8 month period. When he was released, doctors placed him "loosely" in remission. Nine months later, he was re-diagnosed and passed away the following year. Nine months after his passing, Patrick was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocyic Leukemia which he considered a blessing and a kick in the tail to get going with what he felt his purpose was, spreading the message Tyler was sent to give. A message of faith, love and hope. Two years after Tyler's passing, Patrick wrote the screenplay and co-directed the film and also co-authored a children's book with his wife, Heather, also inspired by Tyler's zest for life and helping others. He also enjoy writing a weekly political column for a family owned newspaper, is an inspirational speaker on the topics of cancer, living with cancer, grief, faith and hope and am an advocate for childhood cancer research and funding and is signed on with Single Source Speakers agency in Nashville, TN. Patrick enjoys writing in all genres from drama to suspense thrillers and even children's stories. "I don't want to be boxed in with one particular genre. My main focus is screenwriting and film making though I have interests in writing more children's books and novels." Beyond Letters to God, he intends to focus on faith-based films and books yet be more appealing to all audiences with a broad message that still creates the family friendly environment we all seek in film as Believers, but yet push the envelope a bit, create conflict and emotions of every day life. His desire is to make family-friendly films that are just plain good, clean entertainment. Patrick has two other children, Savanah and Brendan, and currently resides in Nashville, TN. His first books were published by Zondervan and released March 1, 2010. Letters to God, the novel, hit #7 on the New York Times best seller list 7 weeks after being released and reached #5 the following week.
