I've always loved a good story. Even as a kid, I'd listen to the old men tell their war stories on the steps outside the legion on a sunny afternoon. My mum and dad were both raconteurs, they could weave an amazing tale about foreign lands, travel, adventure and danger, all of it true. Later on in school I'd write little stories. But it wasn't until my 30s when I was hired by CBC Radio in Saskatoon that I really learned how to write. It was there that veteran journalist and newsman Bill Cameron took me under his wing. He showed me how to write cleanly, crisply and with purpose. His book, A Way With Words is an excellent primer for the aspiring author. My sojourn at CBC lasted an amazing 16 years. Later, I wrote a humour column for the Canadian lifestyle magazine, Acreage Life. You don't make a pile of money being a writer unless you are someone like J.K. Rowling.
