I first started down "the road to someplace better" in 1958, leaving my family farm in rural Virginia. My dream was to go to the big city, get a good job, make lots of money, meet prince charming and live happily ever after. My someplace better was New York City. My mother desperately wanted me to go to college but as an eighteen-year-old know it all, I knew what was best for me, or so I thought. Little did I know that the big city was not breathlessly awaiting the arrival of a naïve black girl from the country armed with only a high school diploma and some fancy ideas. The only job I could find was working as a maid and I could have stayed in the segregated south to do that. While working as a maid, I never dreamed that one day I would be the CEO of a $20 million janitorial company with 1,200 employees. I went from pushing a broom to owning the broom. It was not long before I realized that New York City was not working for me. First, I had to get back on the right track by doing what my college-educated mother said I should have done in the first place – get an education. At the age of 22, with the aid of loans, scholarships and part-time work, I enrolled in Howard University. There I met my mentor who convinced me, someone who had worn flour sack dresses in grade school, that I was "Harvard material." In 1969, I became the first African American to receive an MBA from Harvard. But even after this historical event , I had no job offers. In that era of the emerging civil rights and women's movements companies probably did not know knew what to do with me. I wrote this memoir "The Road to Someplace Better: From the Segregated South to Harvard Business School and Beyond" to share the life lessons I learned on a journey that took many twists and turns. I did get to someplace better with the help of many people along the way who believed in me and helped me believe in myself. When you believe in yourself, you can chart your own course with confidence. The message of my book is: Dream big, act bold and don’t be afraid to blaze your own path to someplace better.
