Jim Brandstatter is a veteran of 50 years in the sports broadcasting industry. During his time on the University of Michigan football team from 1969-71, he played on two Big Ten championship teams and participated in two Rose Bowl games. Jim ended his senior season as a Wolverine with a 28-5 three-year record and was honored with All Big Ten recognition as an offensive tackle. Over his career, Jim has earned numerous honors and awards, receiving Michigan’s Sportscaster of the Year award twice and being inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, the Gridiron Greats Hall of Fame, and the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, to name a few. Ten months after he played in the Rose Bowl of 1972, Jim began a sports broadcasting career at a TV station in Saginaw, Michigan. From those beginnings came a career that included 43 years on University of Michigan football broadcasts as the play-by-play announcer and color commentator. His last eight years in the broadcast booth he paired with Dan Dierdorf, his Michigan teammate and NFL Hall of Famer, to create a special duo that Wolverine fans religiously tuned into every fall Saturday. In addition to being the “Voice of Michigan Football,” Jim served 31 years as the color commentator for the Detroit Lions football team on their state-wide radio network. He also hosted the Michigan Football coach’s show, Michigan Replay, which was later renamed Inside Michigan Football, from 1980-2022. His current podcast, Conversations With…, is a series where he engages his friends and colleagues to chat about their careers and lives. During his career, Jim has been very active as a motivational speaker and a master of ceremonies for charitable events. He has been a major supporter of the Michigan Cardiovascular Center’s Heart of a Champion Fund, which was started by Jim’s former college coach, Bo Schembechler. The Reggie McKenzie Foundation, Mott Children’s Hospital, Autism Awareness, NFL Alumni Charities, the Michigan Hero’s Museum, and countless other charities have been part of Jim’s commitment to his community. Aside from Jim’s broadcast life, he has also authored two best-selling books--Tales from Michigan Stadium and Tales from Michigan Stadium--Volume II. They were both extremely well received by Michigan’s college and professional football communities. It is that experience in writing these two books that prompted Jim to turn those tales into an audiobook. Voices of Michigan Stadium is a virtual audio history of Michigan football with some of the greatest names in Wolverine history actually telling their stories, thanks to past interviews Jim recorded and saved over the years. Jim has been married since 1980 to Robbie Timmons, a seven-time Emmy-winning news anchor for WXYZ-TV CH-7 in Detroit and author of the moving true-life story “Twoey the Goat.” When not working or finding some project to occupy their time, Jim and Robbie, who still live in Michigan, love to travel. They also spend time in northern Michigan enjoying a cottage they built on the shores of Lake Huron in the mid 1980s. Jim loves to play golf, go fishing, read spy novels, play around with his photography equipment, create slideshows on his computer, and try interesting recipes in the kitchen that he’s picked up in the course of his travels.
