Bio: Janet A. Courtney, PhD, LCSW, RPT-S is founder of FirstPlay® Therapy, a developmental infant and child play therapy and therapeutic storytelling model for parents and their infants and children. She is Director of Developmental Play & Attachment Therapies, Inc. in Palm Beach County, Florida, a TEDx Speaker, an Adjunct Professor at Barry University School of Social Work, Miami Shores, FL, a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor and former Chair of the Ethics and Practice committee through the Association for Play Therapy, and also past President of the Florida Association for Play Therapy. Dr. Courtney's books include: "Healing Child and Family Trauma through Expressive and Play Therapies: Art, Nature, Storytelling and Mindfulness," and "Infant Play Therapy: Foundations, Models, Programs and Practice," and "Touch in Child Counseling and Play Therapy: An Ethical and Clinical Guide," which addresses the often taboo subject related to issues of touch in child therapy sessions. Her research into practitioner experiences of touch in Developmental Play Therapy is published in the International Journal of Play Therapy and the American Journal of Art Therapy. She is a contributing author for her Chapter, "Touching Autism through Developmental Play Therapy" in the book, "Play-based Interventions for Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders." Her chapter, "The Art of Utilizing the Metaphorical Elements of Nature as 'Co-Therapist' in Ecopsychology Play Therapy", is published in "Environmental Expressive Therapies: Nature-Assisted Theory and Practice." Dr. Courtney offers Certification training to practitioners in FirstPlay® Infant Developmental Play Therapy and FirstPlay Kinesthetic Storytelling®. Her children's story, The Magic Rainbow Hug, is an example of this unique form of storytelling. She believes that in order for children to grow and thrive they need, contact with nature, the power of story, and nurturing and caring touch experiences. Dr. Courtney promotes the healing power of play for people of all ages and has been invited to speak nationally and internationally including the Bali, Cayman Islands, England, Ireland, Morocco, Peru, Russia and the Ukraine.
