Greg King is an award- winning journalist and activist credited with spearheading the movement to protect Headwaters Forest, in Humboldt County, California. King initiated the “redwood wars” following the notorious 1985 takeover of the venerable Pacific Lumber Company by the Houston energy and real estate conglomerate Maxxam. Greg King is a fifth generation native of the redwood region whose nineteenth century ancestors owned one of the largest redwood mills in Sonoma County. King has spent decades researching redwood logging and preservation efforts. His articles and photographs have appeared in The Sun, Sierra, Smithsonian, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, Mother Jones, the Portland Oregonian, the East Bay Express, the Sacramento Bee, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, and other publications. King’s reporting on redwood logging, and on the militarization of American youth through computer games, has earned two Lincoln Steffens Investigative Journalism Awards. In 2016 the Environmental Protection Information Center presented King with its annual Sempervirens Lifetime Achievement Award. King is founder and executive director of Siskiyou Land Conservancy, a land trust that serves Humboldt, Mendocino, and Del Norte counties. He lives in Humboldt County.
