I call Perth, Western Australia, my hometown. As is typical of many Australians, I have a wagonload of different jobs behind me. These days, I work primarily in the field of literary translation, but have also worked for long periods as a teacher, seismic navigator, public servant, bookshop-dude and draughtsman. Shorter stints include serving ice-cream at Subiaco Markets (Perth), working as a clown and voluntarily flipping pancakes. From 1993 to 1995, I was privileged to complete my MFA at the University of Oregon under the tutelage of, amongst others, the wonderful Diana Abu-Jaber, Terry Hummer and Ehud Havazelet. In 1996, I was shortlisted for the Australian/Vogel Award for young writers for a collection of short stories (that is still looking for a publisher). After many years living, studying and working in Australia, Japan, and the United States, I currently reside in my “second home” in Cologne, Germany, with my wife, Dagmar, and our two very clever children.
