Dorian was born and raised in a sugar plantation village on the Hawaiian island of Maui. He was always exposed to agriculture and gardening. His grandparents originally migrated to Hawaii as indentured laborers for the sugar plantation, and then did sharecropping with the pineapple plantation. A lot of their food came from their family garden. Since an early age, he worked in the fields picking pineapples. He later worked in the sugarcane fields, swinging a cane knife to cut cane seeds. Dorian served in the military and later worked overseas for a Department of Defense contractor. Along with his life partner Patty, they raised four daughters in Hawaii, Japan, Okinawa, Seattle, Alaska, and Colorado, before returning to Hawaii to care for their elders. Dorian received a degree from the University of Maryland in Business and Management and also received a graduate certificate in Information Systems Management from City University in Bellevue, Washington. Everywhere they lived, they always grew a garden to supplement their family food supply, even if it was only in a pot. Since returning to Hawaii, Dorian and Patty established and operated a backyard aquaponics farm for twelve years. They are currently adding permaculture, container and raised bed gardening, sprouts and microgreens in addition to aquaponics to support their goal of helping others to learn and grow their own food in their unique circumstances.
