David Hirzel landed at Sky Ranch overlooking Pacifica, California at the end of 30 years of wandering that started in West Virginia, with extended stops in Florida, Virginia, Lake Tahoe and various points between. In the course of time he has published the poetry chapbook "Sea Sonnets", stories, articles and plays based on historical events, but his true calling has always been the history of Antarctic exploration in the "heroic" age. The fascination began with a first reading of Shackleton's Valiant Voyage in 1961, and never ended. One result has been the three-part nonfiction "polar biography" of the Irish explorer Tom Crean. "Sailor on Ice" follows him toward the South Pole with Scott in 1910; "Hold Fast" shares his adventures with Shackleton's "Endurance" expedition in 1916. "Antarctic Discovery" goes back to the beginning of his career as an explorer. All three books see the world through Crean's eyes, as the terrifying dangers of the ice unfold before him, the outcome always in doubt. With these as a nucleus, he started Terra Nova Press, which has expanded to include business and self-help topics. Take a look at two recent books, co-written with Brad Borkan. "When Your Life Depends on It--Decision-Making Lessons from the Antarctic" explores the life-and-death decisions made by the early Antarctic explorers, and what we can learn from them to make better decisions in our modern lives. In “Audacious Goals, Remarkable Results: How an Explorer, an Engineer and a Statesman shaped our Modern World” you’ll discover inspiration for grand ambition, valuable insight into present-day civilization, and effective strategies for success. David Hirzel lives at Sky Ranch overlooking the Pacific Ocean California, writing, managing Terra Nova Press, and watching the whales and the Pacific sunsets. When not writing, he might be found sailing on San Francisco Bay, or crossing the Atlantic sharing his maritime expertise with fellow travelers.
