Darryl J Kimball is a commercially rated helicopter pilot with over 2100 hours in turbine powered helicopters. The bulk of his flight time, 1650 hours, is in the MD500 series helicopter. Additionally, he has 300 hours in the Bell 407 helicopter and over 100 hours the Bell 205A1++ (Huey airframe.) Lastly, Darryl has over 400 hours flying helicopters on night vision goggles some of which included night time rescues in San Diego's rugged backcountry. Originally from the small town of Oktaha Oklahoma, Darryl spent a little more than five years assigned to the San Diego Sheriff's Aerial Support Unit, (ASTREA) as both a tactical flight officer and a pilot. He promoted out of the unit in July of 2010. In 2012, after a little more than 2 years as a patrol sergeant he was transferred back to the Air Unit where he finished out his career. Darryl retired in July of 2015 after a 29 year career with the Sheriff's Department and a final 2.5 years as a supervisor in the Air Support Unit. Darryl maintains a blog about flying police helicopters at, www.policehelicopterpilot.com He has posted several articles on the site devoted to teaching others how to become a police helicopter pilot.
