Angela Harrelson, George Floyd's aunt, grew up in an old raggedy shack in eastern North Carolina, and was taught by her sharecropper parents how to get along in a country that made black people sit in the back of the bus. She worked the tobacco fields during high school to pay for school clothes, became head cheerleader, and won the title of Ms. Congeniality in local beauty pageant. The win put a proud smile on her mother’s face and she shared the news with one of the white farmer's wives. Sadly, the farmer’s wife didn't believe it was the same black girl that worked in their tobacco fields. Angela overheard her say to her mom, "That is no way your daughter." Angela’s mom told her, "It doesn't matter." When you got the proof with the truth, that's all you need know ". A few years after graduation from high school she attended community college in Iowa where she hoped to become a lawyer. She later changed her mind about pursuing a law career when her law professor said that he did not teach black people because he is racist. Intimidated by his position of authority and white influence, she pursued nursing instead. Harrelson graduated with a Bachelor's degree and served in the military for nearly 15 years, which helped pay for school. She left the Air Force as a Captain and has been working for almost 30 years as a Registered Nurse. Angela made a promise to George Floyd's mother, Sissy, that she would be there for him and would continue to encourage him to stay focused on his plans. George Floyd is the name the world knows him by but the family knows him by his middle name, Perry. Perry moved to Minneapolis to build a new life for himself. Once Angela learned he was in Minnesota, she felt so much joy having a close family member in town. Before her nephew's death, she felt people didn't want to talk about racism, but she’s now encouraged because there's a conversation about it across the world. She continues to be humble, blessed, and emotional at times that God has given her the chance to write this book, "Lift your Voice, How My Nephew George Floyd’s Murder Changed the World". She said, "He paid his dear life for it". I hope that when people read the book, they will be able to lift their voice and make a difference in someone’s life. This book is emotional, you will cry, weep, and it may even make you laugh a little. Angela Harrelson hopes this book inspires you to do something good no matter how small it is. She said, "The Change is here. The awareness is here. We all can make this world a better place for all races. Why? Because we are all human beings". Minnesota has been her home since 1998. Perry is missed dearly by his friends and family who will continue to be a voice for him as she is by sharing her story for the world to read.
