www.allisonweiserstrout.com I grew up in Westchester County, a little more than an hour outside of NYC, with my parents and my older brother. At the time, Katonah was a small hamlet and just borderline suburban, with not quite enough density to feel busy or exciting. I didn’t really mind the quiet since I was a bit of a homebody. As a middle schooler, my favorite places to go were the library and the town pool. Basically, I was most comfortable with my head either in a book or under water. Although I liked spending time on my own, I also wished I could be the type of person who was comfortable in a big group of more exuberant souls. And that’s where the idea for my debut novel, NEXT DOOR TO HAPPY, began. I imagined someone like Violet–who’s a little bit quiet and drawn to observing rather than participating—getting the opportunity to join that kind of group when a family with five kids moves in next door. More recently, I’ve been lucky enough to form my own version of a crowd for fun. My husband, Charlie, and I have three kids–Griffin, Eliza, and Nate–as well as two dogs, Percy and Ramona, all of whom are pretty exuberant in different ways. I’ve also found an assortment of great friends to keep things peppy. I still enjoy more solitary activities like writing, reading, swimming, and running, but I have a real appreciation for how everyday happiness comes from being with the people I love.
