I am from south GA, so the narrator's Southern accent was a bit overdone for me. Not all southern people, including those from Louisiana, have deep drawls that make them talk really slow and make their sentence inflection totally different from everyone else in the modern world. The accents on the show are better. The story is good. I just had to bear through the narration. It wasn't something I got used to, either. I kept having to bear through it until the end. Others may not have this problem, I'm not sure. A good rule of thumb is to sample the narration first. :)

I am a big fan of this entire series. I have read them all at least twice, so I have pretty set ideas of how the characters should be and how they should sound. The narrator in this recording does a wonderful job. Her reading has lots of nuance and I think it is really how Sookie would sound. She also does a great job with the other voices and it is easy to tell when she switches characters.

I will be buying the entire series on audio.

The book was not very original in my opinion. I felt that there were too many similarities between the Harris' characters and those of Stephenie Meyer (I could list them, but I don't want to give away any spoilers). Also there too many sex scenes... I almost didn't bother to finish the book because it was getting to a point that it was just overdone. Luckily, it stopped and the story got back on track, just to come to an abrupt, anticlimactic end. Another thing, I dislike the way the narrator makes every male in the story sound like a caveman - and Bill the boyfriend sounds especially dim-witted.
Overall, a disappointment.

Thoroughly enjoyable, fast and easy fiction about vampires, love, lust, murder, loss and discrimination. Pretty much all the bases are touched here.

If you're looking for a "thinking" novel, this ain't it. If you're looking for light entertainment that will make you smile and might make you blush a bit (sexual content), this is it.

I have never seen the show that is based on this series so can't speak to how similar it is, but, even though it's the first book in a series, it is self-contained and the story is concluded satisfactorily. I'm already downloading the next in the series.

The narrator is excellent - her characters are distinct, her accent is great for the locale, she doesn't overdramatize and she does a decent job of male voicing.

In some ways it's similar to Charlie Huston's No Dominion - vampire fiction meant for adults - but Harris' story has quite a significant "romantic" thread in it.

I wouldn't leave a review until I finished all 9 books. And I am happy to say I loved every one of them, I couldn't wait to download the next. If you have started watching the True Blood series on HBO this is not the same. This is much better. Hands down the most entertaining series I've listened to in a long time.
