Why we think it's Essential: A street-smart girl. Her pet daemon. A golden compass that reads truth itself. Oh, and a full cast dramatic reading that includes author Philip Pullman. The book is fantastic, and the full cast audiobook is that much better. This is the first book of a trilogy that is as exciting as The Lord of the Rings and will prove as timeless as The Chronicles of Narnia. —Chris Doheny

Publisher's Summary

When Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon decide to spy on a presentation her uncle, the commanding Lord Asriel, is making to the elders of Jordan College they have no idea that they will become witnesses to an attempted murder, and even less that they are taking the first steps in a journey that will lead them into danger and adventure unlike anything Lyra's unfettered imagination has conjured up.

Though she has been raised at the college in an atmosphere of benign neglect that has allowed her to become a half-wild child of the streets, Lyra soon finds herself apprenticed to the elegant Mrs. Coulter, and in possession of a strange device called the alethiometer, a "golden compass" that reads not true worth, but truth itself.

But truth is a precious commodity, and before long Lyra and Pan are running for their lives, the object of an obsessive hunt by mysterious forces who have been stealing children for dark purposes that no one understands. Lyra will need all her street-learned wiles if she and Pan are to survive.

An international sensation from the moment it was published, The Golden Compass comes to spectacular new life in this unabridged recording, narrated by Philip Pullman himself, with the support of some of the finest actors of the London stage.

From AudioFile

Philip Pullman has created a stunning alternate universe peopled by those who seem familiarly human and by miraculous creatures: daemons, armored bears, witches. But now something sinister is abroad in this strangely modern, strangely archaic world, and 12-year-old Lyra Belacqua must try to discover the truth. Into this complex scenario marches Pullman and a remarkable group of readers, expanding the book in a way one might have thought impossible. This is an example of a full-cast recording at its zenith. The actors are well suited to their roles, Pullman proves himself to be a natural narrator, and the decision to remove extraneous text (he said; she said) allows for a more unaffected flow of the story. This is an incomparable treat for lovers of fantasy literature. (c) AudioFile

His Dark Materials is a really great series. It draws you in and keeps you on your toes. I really enjoy the innocence of it paired with the thorn of deceit. It is a must have. I've listened to it time after time and it still has it's good time luster.

I was encouraged by the reviews of other listeners to listen to the Golden Compass (Northern Lights). I liked it pretty well, but maybe not well enough to continue with the series. I liked the girl who did the voice of the main character, and having the ensemble cast mostly worked ok, although the timing of the transitions, especially with the narrator, was a little jarring at times.

These are minor quibbles, and my bigger concern was with the story. I thought it was just ok. It did take a while to get interesting, as others have noted, and that was a pain, and when it did get going, it was ok, but not outstanding. It's a bit pretentious for a kids book, and a bit callow for adults.

That sounds negative, I guess: I still enjoyed it pretty well.

This excellently produced rendition features not just the author reading (well) from his own work, but a full cast performing all the voices. They do a splendid job, really bringing the book to life.

Having read this book before and been disappointed in the film, this was great! I really enjoyed the voice cast and think they were spot-on! I cannot wait to start listening to The Subtle Knife.
