Why we think it's Essential: This full-cast recording of Dune succeeds in every way the now-infamous movie version failed. The alien landscapes emerge in your imagination, while the complex plot lines and complicated relationships gain clarity. Through the talents of a marvelous voice cast, which includes Scott Brick and Simon Vance, Dune sheds the daunting burden of its epic richness - and becomes a powerful story of personal conflict and heroism. —Steve Feldberg

Publisher's Summary

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

It's a good thing they made that movie based on the book back in 1984 or this audio book would have left me with a negative feeling towards Dune. I'm pretty sure reading the book would have given me this same opinion; over hyped and boring. Since my childhood, missing out on reading Dune in school and seeing the movie back in 1984 as a kid, I've been dying to read this book. I still have the pamphlet/handout (an information sheet to define the terms used in the movie) I received from the theater (back in 1984), that's how crazy I was about the movie. Anyway, I didn't really understand the deeper meanings but really enjoyed the movie. I've always had a spot for the movie. Bought the DVD as an adult then bought the HD DVD version (LOL, actually it was free with my HD DVD player) during the Hi-Def DVD war. So much hype has been made about Dune (the book) but I don't see it. I was so bored with this book; I couldn't wait for it to end! This just isn't my kind of sci-fi / fantasy novel. The last great Sci-Fi novel (audio book) I had my hands on was The Accidental Time Machine and I'm working my way thru The Forever War, I'm only 27 minutes into The Forever War and it beats Dune hands down. Time for me to break out the HD DVD to get back the good feelings I had towards Dune, good thing the movie is "based" on the book and isn't a word of word reproduction.

As a child of the fifties I was in a prefect place to be the beneficiary of the best science fiction ever written. By age 15 I had visited many fantastic worlds in My imagination, and by age 18 I was becoming a bit jaded with the current offerings. Enter Frank Herbert and "Dune". His creation blew My mind with its detail, especially at a time when environmental awareness was beginning to come into fashion. I had no idea that such an elaborate world could be contained between the covers of a paperback novel.
In the mid seventies I had the great pleasure of meeting Mr. Herbert at a science fiction symposium at Colorado State University, and it was an experience I will always treasure because Mr. Herbert turned out to be just the nicest down to earth person You would ever want to meet.

I had not revisited Dune since college. This was wonderfully put together and narrated like a play. Just ordered number 2!

Needless to say Dune is one of the most important science fiction novels ever written, which is faithfully presented in this audiobook. What I must comment here is the fact that this is performed by several talented narrators, providing the vividness of a radiodrama, while keeping the authenticity of an unabridged audiobook. Very splendid and highly recommended.

Brilliant book to begin with. Well narrated, several different people do various characters giving depth to the experience. No extraneous music. The strong narrative of the story makes it easy to pick up where you left off.
