Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: This full-cast recording of Dune succeeds in every way the now-infamous movie version failed. The alien landscapes emerge in your imagination, while the complex plot lines and complicated relationships gain clarity. Through the talents of a marvelous voice cast, which includes Scott Brick and Simon Vance, Dune sheds the daunting burden of its epic richness - and becomes a powerful story of personal conflict and heroism. —Steve Feldberg

Publisher's Summary

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

A stunning blend of adventure and mysticism, environmentalism and politics, Dune won the first Nebula Award, shared the Hugo Award, and formed the basis of what is undoubtedly the grandest epic in science fiction.

Frank Herbert's death in 1986 was a tragic loss, yet the astounding legacy of his visionary fiction will live forever.

It should be emphasized that this book is not pure geek sci-fi. It is a masterfully written drama and epic not too dissimilar from something like Lord of the Rings. The characters are well-developed and dialogue is tight. The narration is nothing short of outstanding. I cannot imagine anyone who would not like this, regardless of taste. Highly recommended. Please give it a try - you will be happy!

This has to be the most well-produced audiobooks ever created. We all know the Dune story, and this is a perfect rendering. Well worth the price. You wont be disappointed.

I KNOW that this is classic SF, and NOT reading Dune is like not seeing Star Wars. Even so, I bought this book in December 2008, and I STILL have not finished it.

This is probably the worst listen in my library of 200+ titles.

Every month or so, I force myself to listen to more of the book, hoping that I might be able to kill a few chapters or fall in love with it, but every time, I turn it off after a few minutes, and consider setting my MP3 player on fire, just so I'll have an excuse to stop listening.

Listen to the sample before you buy this book; I think that the problem is in the vocal acting (if that's the correct term for the narration when it flounders between a complete monotone and overblown dramatic delivery.

I think maybe I'll pick up a print copy and see if that works better for me.

The basics of the story (strong young man comes in and saves primitive but good people upsets the world as we know it) are not exciting but the story is mostly well done. The world is well created and the detailed. The book doesn't feel dated as many sci-fi books often feel. Well done as an audiobook as well, great narration.
