Story
Were the alien and his robot here to help or hinder humankind? Find out the surprising answer in the original story that inspired the classic 1951 science-fiction movie The Day the Earth Stood Still. This is a must-read for any science-fiction lover, for, as the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction says, "the film lost the story's ironic ending." Now listeners can discover first-hand what Hollywood left out in this best-known novella of the legendary 1930s idea man, Harry Bates.

Story
Harry Bates was an American science fiction writer and editor who would, most likely, be totallyforgotten today if it were not for this one extraordinary story of an alien named Klaatu and a giant and super-powerful robot. The story became the basis for the 1951 and 2008 films The Day the Earth Stood Still. However, as is often the case, the movie took only some elements from the story and changed others completely. In the story, for example, the robot is named "Gnut." In the movie, it became "Gort."

Story
The way we feel about another person or about objects is often bound up in associations that have no direct connection with the person or object, at all. Often, what we call a "change of heart" comes about sheerly from a change in the many associations which make up our present viewpoint. Now, suppose that these associations could be altered artificially, at the option of the person who was in charge of the process.
