It’s easy to get overwhelmed. Auto mode is the safest bet, and it served you well up until now.

Story
Black and white photography is considered by some to be more difficult than color photography, simply because color ceases to be an element in the finished product. However, it is still an element to be considered while shooting, because color affects what greys, whites, and blacks you get as a result. Black and white can make your photos much simpler, pared down to the basics. This can make photographs appear more serious or scary, or even take away considerations of decade or century.

Publisher's summary
In Photography Composition, you will find all you need to know to learn the basics of composition. It will teach you the proper terms and ways to apply rules that you might already know instinctively yet not quite understand why they work the way they do.
Here's a preview of what you'll learn:
- Happy accidents: This tip teaches you how to pay attention to the following rules in order to replicate happy accidents and to be able to more purposefully craft your photographs.
- Rule of thirds: It teaches you where to place points of interest in your photos.
- Leading lines: This tip shows you how lines can help move a viewer's eye around the composition.
- Move around: Moving around gives you access to different perspectives, which might actually bring better compositions than what you first assumed.
- Horizon lines: Different from leading lines, horizon lines break up the frame into two parts.
- Shape: You will learn how to utilize shape that already exists in the frame and how to create it where you want it using points of interest.
- Foreground and background: This tip mentions usage of midground and why you should take advantage of the entire depth of your frame, not just the immediate foreground.
- Weight: You can give weight to your photos by placing a "heavier" subject to one side or the top or bottom of a frame.
- Juxtaposition: This basically means that you will place two opposite things side by side.
- Balance: Balance - ironically, you may think - is achieved in odd numbers.
- Tension: You can create tension by examining the relationships of your subjects and composing them accordingly.
- Framing: Framing can dramatically alter a viewer's perception of a scene.
- Color: Color can often be used as a crutch by new photographers.

Story
With Emmy, Grammy, and six-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald as Blanche DuBois alongside Carla Gugino as Stella, O’Hara takes a fresh and visceral look at the emotionally charged relationship between these two iconic sisters. Haunted by her past, Blanche seeks refuge with Stella and Stanley (Ariel Shafir) in New Orleans, where she wrestles with the nature of her sister’s husband, her sister’s denial, and her own unraveling mind.

Story
The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

If you want to create interesting photos that will go above Instagram selfies and vacation memories, you need to switch to manual mode. You probably bought your first semi-professional or professional camera, but it looks so complicated. With all the buttons and switches, new cameras might look scary at the beginning. It’s easy to get overwhelmed. Auto mode is the safest bet, and it served you well up until now.

It explains the three components to exposure, which are ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. Concepts such as depth of field and a quick overview of Ansel Adams' zone system are also covered. The focus is mainly on how to get a great exposure from the start, but there are also tips on how to fix an overexposed or underexposed photo.

How does the spectacle of the sufferings of others affect us? Are viewers inured - or incited - to violence by the depiction of cruelty? Susan Sontag here takes a fresh look at the representation of atrocity - from Goya's The Disasters of War to photographs of the American Civil War, lynchings of Blacks in the South, and the Nazi death camps, and to more contemporary horrific images of Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Israel, and Palestine, as well as New York City on September 11, 2001.

While Chris spends significant time on the fundamentals of “getting the shot” - working with natural light, nailing focus, dialing in the correct exposure, effectively posing and directing the subject, intentionally composing the frame - he also passionately discusses the need for personal development, creative collaboration, and connection with the subject.

I wish it was a longer book
I think this book was packed with a lot of useful information, but it felt rushed and quickly spoken. I would have loved more examples or to take more time explaining when to use which method, for example describing some famous photos to break down why it worked.
Thanks though for writing this, and I will definitely listen through a few more times to try and absorb more the next time through.
