The only girl of seven siblings, Sandra Cisneros (1954-) is one of the most famous Mexican-American writers. Her most acclaimed work, The House on Mango Street, portrays the life of a young woman in Chicago's Latin Quarter and is mandatory reading in many high schools in the United States.

Her Style Cisneros' novels contain poetic prose with feminist overtones, and they seek to draw attention to the upheavals experienced by Latinas in the United States. Her poetic work is a clear example of melodrama, quintessential of much of the artistic work of her ancestors’ country of origin.

Written to be Heard Cisneros’ characters have a voice of their own. They portray the unending internal struggle felt by those who don’t identify with either American society or their country of origin. Uncertainty, caution and existential emptiness are intertwined in dialogues that try to define what it is to be Chicano.
