Karen Emilson was born and raised in southern Ontario, moving to a cattle ranch along the shores of Lake Manitoba in 1982. She worked as a small-town newspaper reporter and freelance writer until she was approached by Dennis and David Pischke to write their memoir. "Where Children Run" was published in 1996 and went on to become a Canadian bestseller followed by the sequel, "When Memories Remain" in 2001. Karen also co-authored the memoir, "My Every Breath" with lung transplant survivor, Anna Maynard. When Lake Manitoba overflowed its banks in 2011, flooding out the farmland at Siglunes, she was inspired to finish the novel started ten years earlier about the Icelandic immigrants who carved out a living there. "Be Still the Water" was shortlisted for the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction; a finalist for the 2019 Canadian Book Club Awards and an IPPY silver medalist. Now she lives in Winnipeg during the winter and Steep Rock in the summer months. Her forthcoming novel, "Also Known as Jaime Dorn," is a companion to "Be Still the Water," set in the fictional town of Lundi—in the heart of Manitoba's Interlake region, a hardscrabble place rich in atmosphere and history.
