Im Sommer 1914 begann Franz Kafka mit der Arbeit, machte rasche Fortschritte, schloss aber die Arbeit bereits im Januar 1915 ab und überließ das Manuskript im unvollendeten Zustand, in einer Mappe, als ungeordnete Sammlung von einzelnen Kapiteln. Sein langjähriger Freund Max Brod veröffentlichte den Roman ein Jahr nach Kafkas Tod im Jahr 1925 in seiner bis heute befolgten Sortierung der Kapitel.
