Rudolf Heß Gefangener Nr. 7 Am 10. Mai 1941 flog Rudolf Heß allein nach Schottland, um Friedensverhandlungen mit den Briten aufzunehmen. Er wurde gefangen genommen und bis zu seinem angeblichen Selbstmord am 17. August 1987 inhaftiert. 20 Jahre später bricht der tunesische Krankenpfleger von Heß erstmals sein Schweigen: Auf Bitten von Heß hatte Abdallah Melaouhi damals zahlreiche Kassiber aus dem Spandauer Gefängnis geschmuggelt.

Erst Kaiser Wilhelm II. ließ zum Schutz der deutschen Kolonien und zur Abwehr gegen eine britische Seeblockade eine eigene Flotte bauen. Da sie der britischen Marine hoffnungslos unterlegen war, favorisierte die kaiserliche Admiralität den Einsatz von U-Booten, um mit relativ geringen Mitteln eine größtmögliche Wirkung zu erzielen. Am 20. November 1945 eröffnete das Internationale Militärtribunal im Saal 600 des Nürnberger Justizpalastes den so genannten Hauptkriegsverbrecherprozess. Einer der 24 Angeklagten war der ehemalige Gauleiter von Franken, Julius Streicher, der zu den umtriebigsten und radikalsten Antisemiten des Dritten Reiches zählte. Die von ihm im Jahre 1923 gegründete Zeitschrift "Der Stürmer", die Mitte der 30er Jahre eine Auflage von fast 600.000 Exemplaren erreichte, hetzte Woche um Woche mit primitiven Karikaturen, abstoßenden Fotos, Ritualmord-Geschichten und zotigen Texten gegen das Judentum.

Der für uns Deutsche ungewohnte Begriff des "Zweiten Dreißigjährigen Kriegs" stammt aus England. Die Briten umschreiben damit - in Anlehnung an die Geschehnisse der Jahre 1618 bis 1648, die in die Geschichtsschreibung als "Dreißigjähriger Krieg" eingegangen sind - den Zeitraum vom Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Sie teilen diesen Zeitraum nicht - wie wir Deutsche - in zwei unterschiedliche Epochen mit zwei voneinander unabhängigen Kriegen, sondern sie begreifen ihn als historische Einheit, in der zwei Kriege um die Vorherrschaft in Europa geführt wurden.
