Ein reicher Grieche namens Chrysodaktylos (zu Deutsch: Goldfinger) versucht, auf ausgeklügelte Weise, durch den Einsatz von Hypnose und unter unfreiwilliger Beihilfe ausgesuchter Varieté-Artisten, den Schild des Achilles, eine Berliner Leihgabe, aus dem Museum von Athen zu stehlen. Sein Motiv: Patriotismus. Prof. van Dusen hat dafür Verständnis - dennoch greift er ein, weil er die vom Täter eingesetzten Mittel, die bis zum Mord reichen, missbilligt.
