Eine Meistererzählung aus der zweiten, späten großen Schaffensperiode des großen norddeutschen Meisters des literarischen Realismus Theodor Storm, die von etwa 1871 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 1888 reichte. "Eine Halligfahrt" berichtet von der Fahrt eines jungen Mannes, der seinen eremitenhaft auf einer kleinen Nordseeinsel lebenden alten Vetter besucht und nun für einige Momente in dessen verlorene Jugendzeit eintaucht und dabei erkennt, dass auch jener scheinbar von allem so Abgeschiedene eine große Liebe und große Zeiten hatte, die er allerdings vergeudete, so wie der junge Erzähler nun dabei ist, seine "eigenen Zeiten" zu vergeuden.

Bereits als Student sammelte Storm in den Jahren um 1840 mit dem späteren Historiker Theodor Mommsen und dessen Bruder Tycho Märchen und mündlich überlieferte Volksprosa. Die Sammlung wurde im Jahr 1845 von Karl Müllenhoff zum Druck gegeben. Im Jahr 1849 griff das dänische Königreich Dänemarks Schleswig an, dessen Truppen durch Freischärler aus ganz Deutschland verstärkt worden waren. Die Dänen siegten bei Idstedt und beschossen Friedrichstadt; damit war zunächst das Schicksal Schleswigs als deutscher Bundesstaat besiegelt.
